Wood splitting with a B3200

Hello all, 2 questions. i would like to put a 3 point wood splitter on my tractor and was wondering if this tractor has the capability to support remote hydraulics on rear of tractor, and what would be the flow rate. If not, can anyone recommend a good 3pt hitch splitter with and without PTO hydraulic pump. Thanks for any info. Dave

IDK what your gpm is rated for. But I used one on a BX22 that had 6 gpm +\-, the cycle time is about 12-15 seconds. For me it was fine, some people would want a faster cycle if they needed to produce larger ammts of wood. I used the rear remotes that powered the factory BH. Use the search and type in 3ph splitter, there must be 50 threads.

Tractors of this size class have VERY limited flow and would be quite slow.

Your tractor is spec'd at 9.9 GPM but that is the combined output of ALL the pumps. Hydrostatic trans, power steering, and 3-point hitch. The output you could get at a remote valve would be much much less...most likely 5 GPM, or less.

Most stand alone splitters have a 12-20 GPM flow.

The better way to run a splitter is to get a PTO mount pump, and there you can get 10-15 GPM @ 2000 PSI which will run a splitter just fine.

I'm running a timberwolf TW3, and LOVE IT! Other than the price I've never heard a bad word about a TW splitter.

Ran a Powerhorse 13 ton splitter behind my BX25 with about 3.7 or so GPM and it was fine for occasional splitting. If you go the 3PH route, seriously consider a bi-directional splitter that splits in both directions. Then you don't need to retract the wedge for the next split somewhat compensating for the lack of GPM/speed.

Kubota specs has your tractor at 6.7 gpm for the hydro pump. This is more than my BX had and I was able to make 4-5 splits per minute. I think you will be just fine the splitter if uou are just splitting for yourself. The bi directional wedge is a bonus if you can get one.

Northern Tool still has the Powerhorse 20 ton 2 way splitter which would probably be a match for this tractor. It's $800 but adding shipping and hoses, plus the rear remotes if you don't already have them and you may be up into the stand-alone splitter range.

Using a powerhorse from northern tool on my B7510. I'm fairly young and move at a quick pace. The bi directional splitting of these splitters is fine. The only recommendation I have is , I swapped out the splitter valve with one that had detents both ways, so you don't have to hold the handle for the entire stroke. Really makes it more efficient. Direct swap and worth the extra $$. I did this after 2 yrs of running the stke valve!

If you are looking Split Fire, Timber Wolf and Wallenstein are all made in North America, All are good splitters . The Split Fire is the original bi directional splitter. I would I have split 30" diameter Maple and over 24" oak with no problems on my 3403" which is a 14ton that they claim is equivalent to a 20 ton based on design. based on 6.6 gpm a 4" 20ton powerhorse model wood take 12 seconds to travel the full 24" the splitfire 3203/3403 would take 9.2 seconds making it about 30% faster than the powerhorse. the 3203 list for $1100 versus the powerhorse at $799 Splitfire offeres the 4 way wedge with the 3403 ($1500 list price) that is not available as an option on the powerhorse , This doubles your production capacity over the powerhorse making the extra dollars for an American made splitter worth it in my mind. i also opted for the log lift another option that you can not get on the northern tool model. The only draw back for someone with smaller tractor is that the splitfire is about 6 feet long. Not really a problem for me as my tractor and loader are already 20 feet long If i can fit the tractor in there I can get in to a spot with the splitter no problem.

I too have a TW3 and it is great on the M5040. However, I tried it one time on the B2710 and as soon as the ram hit the end of the stroke, it stalled the engine! The B2710 doesn't have enough power to trip the end of stroke valve!

As for hooking up to the hydraulics, the pump output is only going to be at maximum rpm. You will have to leave the engine running that way while using the splitter.

For where you are American is a local company currently based in Rochester that has a great reputation for quality splitters and they have been in business for over thirty years.
I personally only like stand alone's vs a tractor mounted. Years ago we sold quite a few tractor mounted and had many farm customers that had the ford 5000- 7000 series and they only had about 7 gpm and customers were not happy with there performance. I watched them and they were not impressive at all compared to the self contained units. The plus of the self contained is also it didn't tie up the tractor! We often run into the same problem with generators that are tractor run. The tractors are normally needed to pick up debris from storms and insead have generator duty!
