Woods backhoe problems

If you don't trust what the dealer reps are telling you it's time to have an independent expert have a look at it. There must be some hydraulic repair/service companies in your area, if not try the CAT guys as their techs are very good. If they aren't available place some calls to some large local industries in your area, they'll be able to point you to someone who is trained.

Have you been able to demonstrate your lifting problem to the dealer.

Edit: After reading a problem someone was having in the Massey thread you might want to check your 3pt hitch control lever to ensure it isn't in the up position.

it has been a complete mess!

i called woods tech support & explained the test results to their engineer. he agreed that they were not as expected & said the valve was likely the problem. the tech support guy agreed to send a new valve, but his manager refused. tech support couldnt tell me why the manager refused and the manager wouldnt return my calls. so after 3 days of being avoided, i found out that woods has a facebook page and i voiced my displeasure. I had a message from the manager waiting for me the next morning and they sent a new valve.

So after 9 weeks at the dealer (sitting outside! Grrr!), taking 2 days off work to do testing at the dealer, 15 hours on the tractor digging holes, calling woods and dealer 3-4 times per day, leaving 1 nasty facebook message, and $150 bill for transporting, I have my tractor back!

It really isn稚 much better, and the controls stick now (they said to spray with WD40), but atleast I got it back! I have so many projects that I have been needing a tractor for! I have learned a valuable lesson though! they will not be touching my tractor ever again. I have bought pressure gauges and I will do it myself! I致e gotta say, I am just FLOORED by the number of people that just don稚 do their JOBS!

thanks

Sorry to hear of your sad story. My experience with Woods has been great. I had my Kioti CK35 for only about a week when the C-clip holding in the swing cylinder on the backhoe popped out. I left a message on my dealers cell phone about 5:30 PM Saturday and Sunday about 10 AM he calls and we discuss the issue. On Monday morning he calls and says that Woods is sending me a whole new cylinder. I contacted a local tractor mechanic to put it in. On Friday morning the cylinder came and the mechanic put it in that afternoon. So in 6 days I was looked after. I purchased my tractor and Woods backhoe from Superior Tractor in Oregon and had it shipped to me on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. So I think the service I got was outstanding given I was in another country from my dealer. I dealt with my dealer who looked after me, not Woods directly, that is part of his job in my opinion.

I would keep looking to find someone who, for sure, can tell you what the problem is and what is required to fix it. Then I would tell my dealer to fix it or have it fixed and send him the bill. In your first post you mentioned you had it a year, so was it new at that time? If so it is under warranty and Woods should look after you, unless of course it has something to do with your tractor hydraulic pump/valves.
Wish you all the best and I know how upset I would be if I were in your shoes.

i think that there were several non-technical issues that are really making it tougher.
1) the dealer didn't believe that there was any problem.
2) the original dealer no longer has a dealership and this dealer kept pointing the finger at the original dealer and didn't want to deal with it.
3) massey tractor and woods backhoe. more finger pointing.

reality is that there isnt really anyone to push on, to 'make' anyone do anything. everytime i add another person to the mix, it just gets more complicated.

Mousefield, do your valves hiss/whine when you using them?

thanks

Not that I have noticed.

What I did notice a few days ago while cutting some firewood that the backhoe dropped a lot. I had a Douglas Fir log, about 58 inches long and 16 inches in diameter about 3 ft from the ground. Went to sharpen the chainsaw and fill it with gas/oil, when I came back about 10-15 minutes later the backhoe had dropped at least 1 ft. Thought this was as awful lot given the small log was maybe 300 - 400 pounds at the most. Called the dealer and he had me extend the backhoe all the way up and out. Within 24 hours the bucket was on the ground. He is getting hold of Woods as we think the o ring in the main hydraulic cylinder may be leaking. It also does not seem to have the same lift it did before. :( Don't know how else to help you, someone  out there must be smart and/or care enough to figure it out. I now have 224 hours on the Kioti CK35 and guess about 50 - 60 hours tops on the backhoe, if that.

One thing I think you could do. Find a dealer that sells Woods and with out going into what you are dealing with regarding your own backhoe ask to try one of their Woods backhoe and see how it compares to yours. May give you more ideas on what could be wrong with yours. See how the controls act and ability to lift and dig.

80cj,

Wow, I can't believe thru all this checking/looking/proding ect.that nobody put a flow meter on your system....shame on them.....if they are the dealer they should have at least one person to test and diagnose this system.....We use these on a routine basis(5 different meters ranging from 2 gpm to 100 gpm)

Get someone with a Flow meter/pressureguage/load valve to test the hyp pump....simple procedure!!!! hook up inline after pump to test efficiency...the load valve puts a simulated load to simulate it working out in the field...

Reading all that you have here this is my opinion.....

Hyd Pump rated @ 8gpm.....hyd valve rated @ 4-6 gpm.....=too much pressure drop thru hyd valve creating heat , after first 10 hrs OK but gets too hot and sluggish? Pump probably junk, too much heat cooking seals in cyls, valves sticking from contaminates of junk pump or warped from too much heat?

That hyd valve 4-6 gpm is way too small (that rating should be MAX, when you figure return strokes on cyls that valve will probably see as much as 10-12 gpms)

I don't mean to jump to conclusions but you need someone who can diagnose the root problem.....the flow/meter will at least rule out pump problem.....

Many people don't realize how easy it is check a pump out....

The Flow/meter should be the first thing on the unit to test and the last thing to take off to make sure everythings running perfect.....

My suggestion:

Test pump (not with just a pressure guage)

strip down reservoir, clean, flush, new oil, filter if pump NG

may have to reseal valves and cyls if they were damaged by the heat(BTW our flow meters have temp guages built in to check that too...

Then run it with flow meter installed to watch how healthy system is....

You need good testing before and after to realize good or bad results of your efforts....

If your dealer cannot do this then you need to go somewhere else....they are just guessing:mad:

Hope your luck changes as all of this curable

Bill:)
