I have not had any problems with the input that I know of. It is always the output that wears out and dumps the oil onto the stump jumper. What is bad about this is that the oil stays in the stump jumper so you don't even know the seal is shot. The only reason I noticed it today is because the cutter was parked on a steep angle and the oil ran off the stump jumper. I check the oil on a regular basis but not daily. Of course this Woods mower is forcing me to check it daily.

I am contemplating parting ways with my MD. So far 4 years is the longest the gearbox has gone without having to be torn apart:(

And like you I am leaning towards a Bush hog but probably a 7' or 8' version so I can use the 7710 on the real hot days and not have all the bugs and heat to deal with.

If your interested in gearboxes you need to know that Bush Hog's and Wood's gearboxes are both made in the same factory in China. So are Rhinos. Komar (sp?) makes them in China. Land Pride has theirs made in China also. Even all the heavy duty boxes for all makers. All Chinese. Some of the bat wing boxes are made in USA. The only single spindle gear box out there that isn't Chinese that I know of is the John Deer box they make at their factory in Spain. On the MX series. So basically the Rhino/Woods/Bushhog are all the same mowers with different paint jobs. Get whichever one your dealer sells that you have the best relationship with. But its kinda hard to cough up 2000+ bucks for a cutter with a $100 Chinese gearbox on it. Wonder how many Yaun that is?

I might consider drilling a 1/8" hole in the stump jumper, as near the center as possible so the oil will leak out and be noticed, and also allow water to do the same. Hopefully a small hole won't be subject to clogging too much.

There is more to a cutter then the gear box. My gearbox issues with this Woods is a result of the way Woods put their cutter together. It is a poor design.

A gearbox does not make all cutters equal.

They may all be made in China but they are not the same design or type gearbox !! my Rhino TW60 uses 000 grease as the lube not gear oil and that stuf it so thick that i don't think it could run out even if it didn't have a seal but it does a great job lubing the gears.

As one 7710 owner to another, do you think you will have enough power to run a 7' or 8' mower with that tractor? I only run a 4' with mine, but have considered building an adapter so I can run the 5' hydraulic deck I also own. Must be nice to have an A/C cab, but I guess I would get spoiled if mine had one.

Well, right now I don't think my 7710 will pull a 4' cutter let alone an 8':(

I was out cutting yesterday with the discbine and the low oil light came on. Before I could even get to the edge of the field she started losing power. I got it up on the road to get her to the barn (1/2 a mile away) and didn't even make it 100 yards. I parked it in my neighbors shop yard and shut her down. It appears the oil sending unit blew. Why it started to lose power so fast does not make sense but it does not sound good. I have to pull it home now and check the oil to see what it looks like and pray there is not a lot of metal in it:(

Best case, I replace the sending unit and go back to work. Worst case, I take it to my dealer and hand over all my money and let them go thru the engine. But if I do that I will bring home the 8210 to use till my 7710 is done. But the 8210 doesn't have a cab:( but it is FWA:eek:

Anyway, the idea of the 7-8' cutter would be so both tractors could use it depending on which one is available. Ideally I will find someone who wants to give me a 15'-20' batwing because it is taking up too much space at their place:D

Yikes!!
That doesn't sound good at all, but hopefully it isn't serious. Any chance if there is something serious, you could locate a salvage tractor with a transmission or rear end problem that you could pull the engine from? If I wasn't unemployed, I would consider helping you fund that idea just for the few parts that I need. Keep us informed of the outcome, please. A sending unit wouldn't have much to do with the power loss, so I am afraid it might be more serious, like maybe an oil pump or such. You were there, so you probably have a better idea. I tend to shut things down at the sight of oil or temp warnings, and figure out what it going on, rather than head for the shop. Mostly that is due to my lack of being able to afford to take a chance on burning up a motor. My wife is one that would drive the vehicle home and mention at bedtime that the warning light came on halfway home and could I check it before she drove to work in the morning. I purchased a nice car for her right after we got married and gave her a phone number to a wrecker service to call if she ever had a question. I told her I would rather pay a wrecker bill home, than for a motor. Luckily she has only had to do that once, and it wasn't anything serious. Here's hoping yours won't be serious either.
In case anyone else was wondering, I am sure Robert_in_NY is aware I was kidding him about having enough horsepower to pull an 8' mower. The 7710 would probably not hesitate to pull the largest batwing through heavy brush.

I am thinking it is the throwout bearing.

I did stop the tractor in the field but it isn't my field and I didn't want to drop any more oil in the field then I already did. Being so close to my own property I was hoping to make it there. But from the time the low oil light came on till she was losing power was less then a minute. I am use to most idiot lights coming on and usually you have time to get to a shop or garage to figure out what is wrong. This all happened so fast it boggles my mind.

But on the bright side, when they go to work on the motor I will have them look the rest of it over and take care of any other potential problems before they become big problems.

Throwout bearing? Hmmm, have to think about that one...
