Hello all, This is my first post!

I have a NH TZ22da and looking to buy a woods tsg50 stump grinder. I only have 22hp with 17hp at the PTO, the grinder calls for at least 15hp. Am I making a bad choice? I have a Merry Mac wood chipper with the same hp rating as this grinder and, it works great on my tractor.

Thanks, Dave.

WOW! 173 views, not one reply. Not even a welcome to the forum.
Thanks.

Hey, NYTZ22DA! I have no idea about your question, but I can sure give you a welcome! I don't post often but have been lurking for quite awhile picking up bits and pieces. I am assuming the forum is a lot like a pond owners forum I frequent and the weekends are going to be tough for replies since most are out using and doing. Hang tight and I'm sure someone will be along with an opinion.

Welcome to the board Dave, you might want to ask your question down in the board's land clearing section also. They are the folks who would be likely to know about stump grinders. I can tell you I am using a walk behind that uses every bit of it's Honda 13 hp.

I was looking at one of these too -- TSG50. I could sure use one, but the $3675 price seems mighty high. Is that about what you were quoted? My PTO is 34HP. Should work with 15HP.

There's a member here using that model with 25 pto hp. He's the lowest hp I personnally know of. I think you'll be fine just take smaller bites. I've asked the guys who own these units about running them with hardwoods, speficially oak. Knowone really had much feed back. I think they're very cost prohibitive. I mean it's half the price of a backhoe and a one trick pony.

LouieJunior I was quoted $3,800 shipped to my door. That is with no hoses. I am also looking at a used one but the guy wants $3,500 and it would be a 3 hour drive each way for me. I think I am going for the new one.

Thanks.

A stump grinder is on my short list. I would think for what they price out at one could be built for alot less. I am thinking a 28-32 inch wheel, cast heavy duty style with some carbide cutters, angle iron or box tube frame and I have a 55 hp NH to operate it. I am sure one can get by with less power but I want to make sure it doesn't take all day on one large stump.
I have tubing, rams, gear box, hoses and a plan in my head. As soon as I find a suitable wheel and teeth to match I will put one together. Woods dealer quoted over 9k for a larger 50-80 hp PTO model.

Dave,

Sorry I missed your thread before. I have a TSG-50 on my Kioti DK50se and I have a number of threads discussing it.

If Woods says you can run it with 15 HP, I would take them at their word.

I will say this. I have a pretty heavy 50hp tractor, with loaded rears, and when I'm grinding black walnut, or oak it flat out shakes the whole tractor if I accidentally move to fast or take too big a bite.

But it works pretty well, and I'm happy.

It is not cheap, and I only advise buying it if you have LOTS of stumps.

I know Foggy111 also has one (and he has more hours on his than I do) and there is at least one other guy also. There is one guy with a TSG100 also... MONSTER stump grinder...

Welcome aboard sir!
Be well,
David

Sorry to have missed your post here too. Welcome! There are at least six guys on TBN whom have bought a TSG50. As stump grinders go...the Woods provides allot of bang for the buck. The biggest features are the quality gear box, slip clutch, Sandvick Wheel and teeth, and quality construction. Good warranty. Most of us TSG 50 owners are pretty happy with our purchase.

In my opinion the Woods is still a light duty grinder most suitable for occasional homeowner or farm use.

Me, and a few others have extensively reviewed these grinders here on TBN. You can find lots of threads by going to the search menu and using the word: stump, or grinder....or stump grinder. Then look at the list for the Woods.

I do not know of anyone using 15 PTO HP.....but one guy had 20 HP IIRC (?). I'm sure with 15 HP you will need to take smaller cuts and will get less work done than if you had more power. I have 25 PTO HP.....and could wish for more....but I get allot done on softwoods. Your results may vary depending on wood type.

Stump grinders take a bit to learn how to operate....and it's hard to know your expectations. Maybe a description of the work you intend to do would help with a further recommendation?
