Not particularly hating on Tesla..... I'd have a big issue with any vehicle with doors designed like this S was.....

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/10/23/man-died-burning-tesla-because-its-futuristic-doors-wouldnt-open-lawsuit-alleges/

With regular mechanical doors/latches, that guy would have had a much better chance of surviving.

Crowd was pretty stupid. Auto safety glass is easy to break with blunt force. Screwdriver, tire iron or any metal object would have shattered the glass and they could have gotten him out but instead watched him BBQ. Sad.

What will they do when rolling blackouts in California last a day in each area?

The Tesla may have "camp" mode, but with no power, the Tesla owner will be roughing it.

Olde School tempered glass..... Yes. Had to do it once, to get a kid out of a hot car.

Modern laminated glass - real different story.

Breaking your car's windows in an emergency might be tougher than you think, study says - Roadshow

Sorry for the drift OP...... but this is a significantly different safety threat, that many people don't know about..... and likely is found on modern EVs too......

Laminated glass needs to be sawed or cut to get through quickly.

Can be done with a manual saw (think pole cutter for trees), and there was a good PSA video I found a year or 3 back (and likely posted in another thread) of a firefighter using one to cut a side-window open.

Well known in the trade/EMS, but a lot of the driving public doesn't know...... do yourself a favour everybody, find out what your vehicle has for glass.

One more time..... sorry for the drift.......

If you taught that to people, they would have forgotten ten minutes later.

Tempered glass is odd. I tried to break some very thin shower door glass with a hammer and had a really hard time.

A friend once showed me how a tiny spark plug sliver of porcelan flung at a tempered car window with a flick of the wrist will destroy it.

Andrew Camarada actually punched through the side glass of an old car he was scrapping. I don't recall if he did it first punch, but I don't think so. I'm guessing that glass flexed in it's metal frame to break. Or simply had no upper door frame.

If I replace house insul-units, I always opt for tempered. It's not a lot more money. We have large windows and Grouse (I think) have come through a few.

I saw the most hidious form of road transportation coming home today I have ever seen. I wanted to take a picture, but figured it would be disrespectful, especially if posted on line.

Menonite Wagon pulled by two horses. Flat bed, made of blue 1" tubing. Thing seemed kind of wonky. Four black high back bucket seats. Some weird skinny rubber wheels.

About 6 or 8 men on board, the ones not having seating , sprawled out on the deck, along with all their tools and lunch buckets.

Straight out of the aftermath of Armegedon.

The stars must have aligned just right or it was already compromised. I tried to break the window out of an old 80's Ford LTD with a ball peen hammer and it bounced back and put a gnarly goose egg on my forehead. I swung as hard as I could after watching my friend fail, and I did not even consider the possibility of it bouncing back. I was 100% confident I did not have to worry about that.
