Sorry for the slightly off topic post, but this forum seemed to fit best. I am considering buying an old diesel farm tank for my tractor. Seller says it has some rust on the inside but no flaking. Seller also says that he had no problems with his equipment usuing an electric pump and filter.

This looks like a 200 gallon tank in a pickup bed trailer for around 150.00. The other option I am considering is buying the aux tank/toolbox combination for my truck. Aluminium, 90 gallons and new but also $800.00

Any advice would be appreciated

Most of the time a guy can find a used 275 gallon home heating tank for $100. I bought one and found 2 real nice ones that were given to me for free and they even dropped one here at the house (didn't even have to pick it up). Watch your classifieds, you may be surprised.

Eh...I wouldn't bet on it. Heating oil is very regional, and I'd be willing to bet there are only a handful of houses with oil heat in the entire state of LA. When you consider the oil industry presence there, most everyone is going to be NG heating. Illinos is the same way. When we bought our place, it was the only oil heat I had ever heard of in the area, and I've live in northern Illinois all my life.

Well, you pays your money; you take your chances.

What is a little rust and how does it form in a fuel tank?

How much fuel do you use a month? I'd pass on the old tank, who knows how bad it is. I'd hate to have a 200 gallon fuel oil spill. Even running 2 tractors I get by with 2 5 gallon cans. My fuel is always fresh and conditioned to the season. I fill up every few weeks in the summer, maybe every 2 months inthe winter. I get my diesel at the local truck stop and fill up the car at the same time, so there's no extra trip to get the diesel.
