Well if it has a lot of wear then a new one may be in order.:D

If you read some of the recent threads I have been an advocate of mowers for lawns instead of compact tractors with belly mowers for the same reasons you state. That said it may save you time and expense in the long run to get the problem areas fixed up in your yard. I would think a couple of weekends with a rental unit may do the trick. Good luck with it.

Steve - i sure have considered fixing it. I've been fixing it for a long time now, but the latest collection of issues are a lot. A couple issues my deere dealer called unfixable, so i figured maybe it's just time to retire her after 20 years.

I have been using it only to mow, and although i'd like to get into using other implements, i don't want to sacrifice comfort, nimbleness, and stability on the steep hills going sideways to get something larger/higher center of gravity.
Steve didn't say anything about fixing the tractor .
He said fix the yard.

Go for the 7 Iron. AWS is nice and all, but when your deck wears out, (not saying the standard deck will), AWS won't cut the grass. Then you would be right back to square one.

Get the AWS if the deck wears out replace it.
>This way you will always have both features instead of only one of them.
Why worry about replacing mower decks?

To me that's more theory than factual.

1*I have been using it only to mow, and although
2*i'd like to get into using other implements,
3* i don't want to sacrifice comfort, nimbleness, and stability on the steep hills going sideways
*to get something larger/higher center of gravity.
1&2* I can do all this with this

3*I haven't made any such sacrifice
*I didn't have to get something like that.

We have a JD 425 AWS and I really do not know how people cut grass without the AWS option.........call us spoiled........my wife cuts around the fruit trees, gardens, buildings, ornamentals....etc.......with ease and most of it on a slope. I hate to think what will happen if this machine ever quits.

From what I see, you can't get an AWS tractor mated to a 7 Iron deck. Guess he'll just have to get one AWS tractor and one with a 7 Iron so that he can have a separate tractor for each task:rolleyes:
