another site has posts describing a dealer telling an owner the noise can be one of the following:

#1 the carrier bearing under the floor board binding with the drive shaft,

#2 the gear backlash in the front diff set improperly.

Can you tell if it only does it under load? Is the noise noticeable at slow speeds?
Please keep us updated.

Thanks

Terry~!

I do own an XUV and I do have a "rattle" in the front end. "Rattle" is a mild word to describe the noise that is in the front end. The noise appears to be coming from either the front differential or half shafts. The noise is not subtle, it is loud and unmistakeable.

Rattle is probably not the proper word to describe the noise. The word rattle would suggest a nuisance rather than a problem. This noise falls into the latter category, a problem.

I'll have to take the unit back to the dealer but that won't be for a few weeks.

I got my 850d XUV in March replacing my 05 HPX. I don't have a noise in the front as yet. For those that do. Is this noise present in and out of 4WD? I have not had my 4WD engaged much as yet. Just wonder if the noise will surface as I use it more or use the 4WD more often.

The noise is worse when under load, such as going up a hill, but it also makes noise just cruising down the street, like the front end is going to rattle apart. I haven't tried 4WD on the pavement yet, so I don't know if that makes a difference. From my understanding of how the 4WD works on the XUV, it only engages if the rear wheels are slipping, so it may not make a difference, but I will try.

If you don't already have the noise, I doubt if you will get it. This seems to be a problem that starts from day 1, not something that gets worse over time.

My recommendation for XUV shoppers is to drive the actual unit you are interested in on pavement before you buy. I tried mine on dirt and did not hear anything, but when they delivered it, and I drove it up the driveway, the noise was there at full volume.

Vics if you have a hill. Try going down the hill in neutral and listen for the noise.
You never know. It could be a run of bad diffs from a certain mold.
Seems the percentage of people with the noise is getting higher.
It was one out of 10 that I knew of. Now its 3 out of 10. Thats not good..
Maybe a reason for a recall....
Deere will fixit.I would like to know what the cause is tho~!

has anyone checked the oil level in the front diferentials? could it be that they just havent toped them off properly?not enough oil will have things rattling around.if possilble can someone pull thier front diferential plug and check it? the reason i'm saying this is on a semi smoothe road it will splash some oil up on the parts to keep them sorta quiet but on a paved road that is really smooth with no bumps the oil will stay to the bottom of the diferential . just a thought.

Good assumption Tommy. Definitely worth looking into. That would explain why some don't have the problem.
It would be nice if it was that easy.
I know from 1st hand experience, dealer prep is almost non-existent from most dealers. If the tires are aired up its ready to sell..

fluids could be over looked on a few at the factory it might be worth checking into. and it might be worth draingint the oil in the front diferential just to check in for shavings. just keep catch it in a clean bucket so you can reuse it cause it's like 25.00 dollars for the fluid to do both front and rear transmission cases.. just find out how much the front should hold and drain it and measure it and see if thats how much comes out.

I've got a new XUV (delivered last week) and I don't believe I have the front end noise that is being discussed in this thread, but it's kind of hard to tell - the XUV has all sorts of noises and rattles when it's moving. I also own 5 antique tractors with all sorts of gear noise when they move - I don't hear anything like that from the XUV front end. When I take it downhill without the clutch engaged it has a gear whine, but I think that's normal for any 4wd vehicle with a front transaxle that's always attached to the front wheels.

Does anyone know for sure if the front transaxle on the XUV is the same one used in the 06 HPX?

Here's an update on the XUV front end noise.

My dealer called to tell me JD has a fix for the front end noise. I just casually mentioned the noise when iI ran into my salesman and he apparently passed my comments on to the service department. The service manager called me the next day and said JD has a bulletin that describes a noise like mine. The service manager offered to come to my house and listen to the noise.

The fix is apparently an adjustment in the backlash of the front diff. This affects just a certain range of serial numbers. The issue is a noise issue not a mechanical wear issue (i.e. a nusiance noise and not a sign of something being damaged).

The fix requires a 1/8 to 1/4 turn of a 3/32 allen wrench on the front diff. This will loosen some plates in the diff which is supposed to make it quieter. (You'd think tightening would make it quieter but apparently not). The tech is supposed to make a 1/8 turn, drive it and make another 1/8 turn if the noise is still present.

Anyway, a tech will come to my property and make the adjustment next time I'm there. I'll provide an update in a week or two.

I must say I am more than impressed with my JD dealer. This is the first JD product I've purchased and the dealer has totally suprised me with being proactive. Much, much better than your typical car dealer. Like I said I just casually mentioned the noise in passing to my sales rep and he passed it on and the Service Manager called me the next day with an offer to come to my place and check it out.
