If I remember correctly the newspaper interviewed people who were going out of their way to buy pure gas and they said they got up to 20% better gas mileage with pure gas than with E10.

If I understand it correctly it is pretty hard to know exactly what percent ethanol you get in the "may contain up to 10% ethanol" blend which may effect your milage.

Chris

OK, so I misunderstood your earlier comment. And now you made me curious. Of course, as you said, I don't really know exactly what percentage of ethanol I'm getting; just up to 10%. And I also don't know just when they started the ethanol.

But just for the fun of it, I went to my records that showed my highest overall average MPG on the Windstar was the fuel bought up to April '07. Comparing that to my mileage for this calendar year (2008), I was getting 10.025% better mileage in the past.

Doing the same thing for the Ranger, my highest overall average was the fuel bouht up to July '06. And comparing that to this year (2008), I was getting 12.131% better mileage in the past.

Those number are about what I expected. But of course not knowing the date the E10 started nor what percent ethanol I'm actually getting, I can't really vouch for the accuracy of my conclusions.:D

Diesel had dropped another 10 cents yesterday afternoon. it was $3.79 in the am. $3.69 in the pm. Gas was $3.59/3.49/3.39.

About a month ago, two fillups ago, I paid $4.19 a gallon for diesel. 50 cent drop in a month.

Later,
Dan

Have you ever heard the joke about the guy who is so cheap his wallet is full of cobwebs? I had to laugh at myself yesterday because I felt like that guy.

I took my diesel pickup to the gas station for the first time in 8 months. I had filled the tank about 8 months ago and just have not been using the truck except when I had to use it. The tank was down to a little over 1/4 full and I have several hauling jobs to do this weekend.

I pulled up to the pump and started to open the flip-out gas lid. It wouldn't open. I pulled hard and it still didn't open. As a matter of fact, I was worried about it bending. Suddenly, it popped and opened with a crunching sound. I looked inside the lid to see that a dirt dauber had built a huge nest right inside the gas lid hinge.:p What a relief. I cleaned out the dirt clods and cleaned around the filler neck before taking off the lid. I may be the only person who is so cheap that dirt daubers build nests around his gas cap.:D

Jim,

That's funny. Thanks for the laugh.

Jim, I once went 18 months on my truck without buying any gas... Ford with two tanks holding about 37 gallons!

Mark, I don't know whether you have mud daubers in your part of the country like we do. I never had the fuel door glued shut like Jim did, but on my old 1981 Ford F250 down in the country, the automatic choke quit working and I was too lazy to see about fixing it for over a year. I just pumped the accelerator when I had to start it cold. Then one day I decided I really ought to fix it, so I removed air filter and filter housing and discovered the only problem was the great big mud dauber nest on the linkage that had it blocked. And while I was at it, I removed two big mud dauber nests from inside the air filter housing.

I found regular for $2.71. Unfortunately by the time I got there they were sold out.

I also found off road diesel for $3.39. The pump was labeled home heating oil but there was a small label that said it was low sulfer off road diesel fuel. It was very red. Heating oil is running $3.19 this week but you have to buy at least 150 gallons.

Come on $2

Chris, yesterday morning I noticed a service station with a sign showing $2.729 while directly across the street another station's sign showed $2.629. Yesterday evening they both showed $2.629. However, about 6 miles from there, the Walmart (Murphy USA) was $2.439.

Bird,

Right now there is enough difference in the price of gas at the different stations that I have been checking one of those gas price tracker web sites before I fill up. It works pretty well unless the station is sold out. One give away I have noticed is if there are no cars filling up at my regular station it generally means the price is too high. The lower price of gas is really helping a lot of people who are tight on money. It is just too bad that our economy had to fall in the dumpster to get here. :(

$2.50 in Riverside. A little cheaper I hear in Houston at some places.

Funny if you look at the last time crude was $70 a bbl, gas was probably under $2.00. Currently unleaded on the merc is about $1.62. No taxes in that of course.
