Why is there such a difference between the milege the Government says we should get and what we do get?

Who said there's a difference?

Bird,
That is still quite a bit below what it is out here in So Cal.
Here's what I paid today 10-14-08 at the corner Chevron dealer.

Wow! While your gas is much higher than ours right now ($2.88), your diesel is 20 cents cheaper than ours at a Chevron station and 10 cents cheaper than our cheapest place. I wonder why your diesel is cheaper? By the way, we are surrounded on all sides by refineries working 24/7 and in close proximity to the oil fields yet we see gas selling cheaper in places 1000 miles away from the closest refinery.

Since I've retired, my cost for fuel has plummeted. It's been 2-1/2 weeks since I filled my Pontiac Vibe. Yesterday, I filled it at a Walmart for $2.68 per gallon with the $0.03 discount. Just less than 1/4 mile down the road, an Exxon station had regular for $2.99 a gallon. While there was a short line to the pumps at Walmart, you could pull right up to the pump at Exxon. I think they had only one car buying gas. Exxon's high profits weren't being realized at that station.;)

"lying sacks of spit"

There. I said it. Now what? :D:D:D:D Sorry just had too say it. Too much work. Too little sleep. No tractor time. :D

Diesel dropped another dime to $3.79. Super was $3.69 which means regular was likely $3.49. The prices here are finally dropping as the supply goes up.

Driving style and traffic has a large effect on your MPG. People complain about fuel prices but I have seen danged few people slowing down. Got passed twice this am on the two lane section of road I drive for about 10 miles. The first guy did manage to disappear ahead of me which seldom happens. The second car I followed all the way to the Interstate at which point we merged into traffic and crawled for a few miles down the road. But hey, she got ahead of me to go nowhere.

My mpg in the F350 SRW has hit a high of 21.2. This time of year, the cold weather will drop the mpg into the mid 20s maybe 19ish.

Later,
Dan

In the places that seem to have ethanol only, is it marked in some way? Here in OK they, passed a law that went into effect around the first of July, that made it mandatory for all stations to mark as ethanol blends. Before this, you had no idea what you were getting, but now it is great to be able to pick the ethanol free places. I have consistently got around 10 to 15% better mpg on the ethanol free gas. It is also great to buy the true gas for all my lawn equipment and boat. This ethanol is pretty bad in situations were it will not be used in short order.
Dave

I think we have a similar law; in fact, I thought it might be nationwide, but I haven't seen a gas pump in quite awhile that didn't have a sticker on it saying that it may contain up to 10% ethanol.

You might have to be more specific

Sorry I wasn't very clear. I was thinking about the EPA saying that E10 gets something like 3% lower gas mileage than Pure gas but that my cars seem to get quite a bit lower mileage than that with E10. Sometimes in the winter the mileage really falls off. Last winter my wife was sure someone was stealing gas from her car because the mileage was so bad. Anyway I can't think of any reason why the government would lie to us.

It is true isn't it that the person who starts the thread is allowed to go political?:D:D:D

If I remember correctly the newspaper interviewed people who were going out of their way to buy pure gas and they said they got up to 20% better gas mileage with pure gas than with E10.

If I understand it correctly it is pretty hard to know exactly what percent ethanol you get in the "may contain up to 10% ethanol" blend which may effect your milage.
