Wish prices were like this when we did our selective harvest of 50 acres of our 80 a few years back. We used a big pro outfit that does a lot of the work clearing besides highways.

As a thought experiment, I wonder if anyone ever made fence posts out of concrete. Everything about fences and concrete on the Net is arguing pros and cons of concrete footers, but as a kid growing up in the city you saw old concrete posts in older areas that were from the 30’s and were very eroded, obviously very old, yet were still standing. I imagine you could precast square posts tall enough to go deep enough in the ground so they wouldn’t be top heavy, perhaps set in larger concrete footing poured onsite. You could set rings into it that would allow fencing to be attached and rebar to strengthen the posts.

Not very practical or cheap, but man, if done properly imagine how long they would last.

I started out with wooden lamp posts. Got tired of the maintenance on them so replaced with ones I cast with concrete. I had the conduit in them, a lift ring at the top, colored concrete and some cast in designs. Turned out nicer than the wooden posts and no further maintenance. The down side is that they are heavy and difficult to set. No further maintenance and I believe they are still in place (I sold it about 10 years ago).

An observation about colored concrete: If you color your concrete, be aware of the color of your aggregate. Aggregate does not color so any that is against the form when it cures will remain that color. I had some white aggregate pieces in a tan concrete column, kinda polka dot color.

I saw some plastic 6" dia fence posts that were pretty good looking. Got to be cheaper than wood and easier than concrete. Guy told me they were made from waste plastic no good for anything else.

Been crazy here in New England. I built a 17 x 13' deck on 2x10 PT with Trex in late July and it took me 6 weeks back then to even get the exact number I needed, no waste or "extra".......it was like 5 deliveries.

My friends that are builders say their quotes are out of date within 7-10days as prices keep climbing with CDX doubling etc.

Crazy times

Store bought 2x4x8 spruce studs $.82/bf
Sawn by neighbor - $.50/bf

You also have to add in the value of your wood. There is a bit of lag, but since you posted this a month ago the price of delivered sawlogs has also gone up.

Nice. Railroads used pre cast concrete poles for mile markers for years and some are still there 100 years later. I'd\d think I cast in a mold concrete post with a rebar center would last a very long time.

I was wondering when you'd pop up over here.... Welcome aboard. It's not OTT however. I'd say you have a very distinct advantage with your portable sawmill.
