Hay Dude, if diesel goes up 50 cents a gallon, do you get 50 cents more for a bale of hay? Does the land owner get paid more? My hay guy is charging me the same price as he did 3 years ago. He is cutting more hay. A lot more work for the same money. Land owners here are getting less for stump-age. Loggers going under every few months.

I can try to charge more for hay, but as I said before, theres never a shortage of guys making hobby hay or beer money hay selling on CL for below input costs undercutting us.
The other aspect is I sell a great deal of hay to a broker and he does wield the power of a take-it-or-leave-it price. I guarantee you he wont feel sorry for me or anyone else and start paying us more for hay.
I don’t want any sympathy, but people have to understand the impact of big fuel price increases. Not everyone can just charge more to compensate for it.

The retailer is making more if the percentage markup stays the same. And there's also the middle men taking their cut.

The owner of the building supply place told me he marks lumber up ten percent and that he really didn’t care if he sold another stick of lumber. He made the comment that lumber to him was like gas to a convince store. It is not where he makes his money but he has to sell it. I assume he makes his money from his counter top shop, door shop, cabinets, etc.

I priced out lumber for a lean to off my barn in January 2020. 4x8 7/16" OSB was $9.35 a sheet. Just checked today and Lowes and Home Depot both want $27.35. 300% increase. I'm not sure how people can afford to be doing all this construction! I certainly can't afford to build at these prices.

Cheap money as a result of low interest rates. I suspect it will catch up to many building more than they can afford. I have several small projects but I will wait for prices to go down.

When lumber went up before local tract builder incorporated steel framing.

Yes.

Steel buildings now look to be cheaper than what I can do via the big box stores (stick built). I guess my carpentry days are over.

I just framed a basement in steel. Used wood around door jambs, etc. but 90% steel. It was cheaper, but steel isn’t cheap now either.
