Picked this up yesterday. 600 + sf of tung and groove pine to cover the ceilings of 2 porches and a carport.

supposedly seconds.View attachment 703605

about 5 inch reveal, 12 ft bds, 1/2 cost of lowe's and better product.

$6/board
Did you wear a lone ranger mask when you made off with them? Who drove the get-away truck?

funny, the guy who told me about the material was one of the building inspectors. they are great here!

he came into my incomplete house, saw extension cords EVERYWHERE, loose wires EVERYWHERE, TV hooked up and an old fridge in the kitchen.

Never said a word about occupancy.

i'm thinking about using the tung and groove material for windows returns. i have 6 in exterior walls and if i cut the tung off, it's perfect. a little chamfer but that might look ok.

the tung and groove material is so much cheaper than flatjam material but not sanded quite as smooth.

Franken - Check a handful of those boards, laying out and slid together to be sure the tongues and grooves align. I once bought a batch of 'seconds' hardwood flooring that looked perfect but the price was drastically reduced. I bought it all even though it was more than I needed. Luckily I did that, because in that mix was an occasional board with the tongue and groove off center and couldn't be used. It still worked out well for me, but if I had only purchased 10% more than I needed I would have been short. Just mentioning this in case your boards are similar, you could pull out the bad lumber to be used in other areas without the tongues.

thx for the tip

the mill selling the stuff said the same thing about buying an extra 10%, i bought about 15% extra because it was cheap. i might cut the tung off and use it for window returns.

so far, everything's going ok. the porches are 10 ft up and i'm not good on a ladder but, so far so good.

a few split ends and the black sanding marks but so far the boards are better than the stuff from lowe's.

i got just past 1/2 done on the first porch and it started raining which, coupled with the humidity, drove me inside to finish the interior trim.

i've got 3 ladders up and ledger boards all over the place. it's a 2 man job but neither one of my dogs will help !

shiplap might have been easier.

Did you finish the T&G before putting it up on the ceiling? Varnishing upside down is no fun. Painting might be a different situation. Jon

That looks pretty nice!

In my mind, it's typical to buy 10% over.
I usually give my lumber customers 10% over for warps, twists, and bends. Even mis cuts.

I pre-finished a lineal mile of T&G 6" pine for my Canada cottage ceilings (huge vault).
I sprayed outside, across 16 long sawhorses that I built.
One coat shellac sealer, one side, then flip over and spray again, after quick dry.
Then inside for longer dry.
Then out for light sanding, wipe down, and urethane spray (one side).
Back inside to dry.
Back outside to sand, wipe down, and 2nd coat of urethane (one side).
Then back inside for final dry.

The task took forever, but the result was perfect, and the back was thus sealed also, with the one coat of shellac.
1/3 the total batch, each time a procedure was done.
