Thanks Relhogh. I think I had it on the edge of it.

Well I did enough damage for today. I loosened the left side cover hoping it would come off.
NO LUCK. I also took off the PTO and I can see the bolts in the end of the axle but thru the two inch whole I don't see getting a wrench on it. I know I could never get it back in.
You mentioned a plate in the bottom but the only bolts are for the pin hitch.
I noticed you had yours removed.
There has got to be someone who had brake problems on a Green
Have a nice evening Y'all

Might have to reconsider removing the hydraulic lift assembly on top.

Relhogh, how is your pin hitch attached? Is it on a flat plate? I'll take a picture of mine. Tell me if it's the same. I had a heck of a time getting the axle housing off. There were alignment pins and 30 yo gaskets holding it all together.

Best picture I can get right now. The plate the hitch is on is the plate that seals the axle housing.

Yeah Winston1, I guess your right.

"d" I think mine is quite similar but hard to use for access.
I took the day off. Dog to vet, me to doctor and me to physical therapy.
Back at it tomorrow.

Hey (D) I am a lazy typist.
Sorry but I couldn't post a reply yesterday.
I took the 8 nuts and bolts off the pin hitch and beat on it.
No luck. Then I noticed somone had welded it on.

I took the hydralic lift off and got a great view of the bolt. Not great access but a great view.
I was able to get a wrench on it thru the pto hole and used a large pipe wrench on the axle and about 40 turns later the bolt came out.I was then able to pry the cover off. The large gear stayed pretty much in place. I can't wait to see what a hassle getting the bolt back in.
By the way the brakes are gone, they were covered in rust.
I was looking a getting some brake material and gluing & riveting it on.
I will send pictures later.
Thanks to you guys for your help.

For future reference, there should be two threaded holes in the housing which aren't used. These are meant to thread the bolts you just removed into. These holes are through holes which allow the bolt to push the cover away from the tractor. Makes easy work of the separation.
