yanmar 1700 block busted

Has anyone ever heard of a freezeplug functioning as they are designed? I know of several blocks that have frozen and cracked, and several freeze plugs that have rusted out and began leaking, But never, ever, heard of a freezeplug blowing out due to ice expansion and preventing a block from cracking.

I think freeze plugs is a misnomer, I believe the openings
are in the block as a clean out after it's cast...

I've heard that as well. Can't verify either.. except that I have seen frozen blocks with no welsh plugs popped out.

Freeze plug is definetly the wrong nomencature. These openenings are designed to remove sand after the casting process.

They have nothing to do with protection from freezing coolant.

lol, thanks for the question, and yes it has a freeze plug and it is just fine.freeze plug apparently did not freeze at all.now if the block was as strong as the plug i would be in great shape.

Norm,

We had a forklift at work where the "freezeplug" actually split before the block. Maybe just luck was on our side, but I agree. Most cracked blocks (because of cold weather) that I have seen; the "freezeplug" was still intact.

I bought a 67 ford galaxie cheap along time ago. The dumb sob rebuilt the motor and wanted to test drive it but he had not bought antifreeze. Well it got colder then expected(colorado) and the water just gushed out. He thought the block was cracked. I did not know but when I got into it I just replaced a couple of plugs with those funky rubber ones. It ran just fine. I sold for $. I guess I was lucky!!

ok, repaired cracked block, used j.b.weld on the outside area and a auto machine shop recomended a glass block sealer thru the radiator for the inside of the water jackets.so far so good.have used for 3 days now and not a hint of a leak.if this holds up will be the best 10 dollars i ever spent.even if i have to resort to a nickel weld later i still feel like this fix was worth a try .

I just had my 99 dodge with the 5.9 cummins block repaired. I used the locknstitch method. Seems to be good solid repair. This is not a patch like epoxy. Welding cast is not something I wanted done. I opted for the cold repair. I had a 3 inch crack. Was done in the frame. This made it a bit costly as the location was not the easiest to get to. If the location is accessible this would work great. Trained people all over the country. Go to www.locknstitch.com. I spent about a hour on the site doing the research. I do not think it would be that hard to do yourself. Call them up and they can tell you if there is someone in your area trained. I am sold on it. This saved me about 5-8k for a block exchange. Probably could get it done for a few hundred bucks.

I'd be surprised if that glass block sealer did much.. sisnce the 1700 has no circulating pump... hopefully it did though.
