The best part about the Dodge is the fact they don't make the engine. The auto tranny is still a big weak spot.
We pulled the Dodge "super engine" out of my friends 1996 model and it had a cracked block that we got stitched.
My son had a 98 Cummins which was also supposed to be the good 12 valve model with the P pump. It had a blown head gasket. Within 300 miles of the head gasket job it had a spun rod bearing.
My cousin has a 2006 model and has gone through three sets of injectors without a lot of miles. He also did a tranny job. I can't believe he still loves the truck because spending that much money would turn me off.
I thought the Duramax was generally okay, other than injector issues on some of the earlier model years. My father-in-law was set to buy a Ford 6 L and he called me from the dealership. The same day I found him a early model 2007 Duramax. He ended up buying the Chev as he's a Chev guy anyways. It's still an awesome truck and has never given him a problem. It's never been chipped, never been worked that hard. Once or twice a year he pulls a light travel trailer and that's it...it better be problem free!!
I am cursed with Ford's because my dad's a retired parts manager. I get cheap parts and free advice from the mechanics. Still, I wouldn't mind having a Cummins. My sons 2011 Cummins with all the pollution crap deleted and a chip and six speed seems like an awesome truck. Heeey....wait a sec...my buddy is selling his Ford Cummins that he's sunk well over $100K into...hmmm.
Ford was getting their engines made by International/Navistar. GM was/is Japanese so I thought that might help them. On their own, I agree: they suck. Altho the current Ford 6.7 has been okay, hasn't it? Haven't heard much trashing about it.
