Yanmar dominates the small marine diesel market and has for some time.

Boat engines operate at very high loads. While car engines often last over 3,000 hours, gas boat inboards seem to last 1,500 hours before overhaul. (The Life Expectancy of the Marine Engine - BoatSafe.com)

Marine diesels average 8,000 hours before overhaul. Anecdotally Yanmars last longer than average and that's why they now dominate the repowering market.

my wife's VW jetta tdi redlines at 4500 rpm's. pretty high for a diesel. my 2014 ram/cummins 6.7ltr redlines at 3200. my john deere 4300 yanmar engine tach only goes up to 3000 rpm's so i'm assuming that's the red line for this engine. that would mean this engine doesn't even rev as high as the cummins in my truck and is much smaller. so i don't think the yanmar would be considered a high revving engine. the japanese aren't very good at coming up with new inventions but when it comes to refining someone else's invention (the germans when talking about diesels) they are second to none. diesels are the most efficient and economical way to go unless you live in a part of the country that salts the roads a lot in the winter, then you don't need an engine that last. you'll need a frame, floorboards, brake lines, and body parts before a gas engine wears out. anyway, from what i've seen on here it looks like i have more hours on my jd 4300 at 3480 than anyone else.

the Mitsubishi diesel in my Mahindra 3016 creates max hp at 2600 rpm. My normal use rpm is 1500-1800 rpm. I've never had it over 2000 rpm.

At those speeds I expect it will last a long time.

i have a mitsubishi fuso box truck with a 4 cyl turbo diesel with 255,000 miles on it and it has been as dependable as anything i have ever owned. it always starts first time every time even in cold weather.

I sold my JD 430. I think I started this thread and I seem to recall it had 3500 hours??

Anyways, i now have a JD F935 72" mower with 1826 hours. It also has a Yanmar. I am trying to sell it and can't get a sniff from a buyer. New blades, all fluids, well maintained. Price is cheap at $4500 CDN (about $3,500 USD).

Only reason I'm selling is that I got a Toro 455 with a Renault diesel. It has 4550 hours on it, but cuts a 12' path. Just trying to minimize my cutting time.

my yard is too steep and rough for a riding mower but hopefully i'll fix that with my tractor eventually.

As is apparent from the many different opinions above, there is no exact answer to this. I agree that, if maintained properly, it should run a LONG time.

I know this is the exception to the rule, but I just sold a 2008 Ford Super Duty with a gas v8 that had way over 200k mikes and 9900 engine hours. It was a service truck, so it saw a LOT of idle time -- but it was serviced religiously. Even with almost 10k hours, it still had plenty of power and ran as smooth as a sewing machine. No tick, knock, smoke -- nothing. At a 3k mile oil change, it typically used 1/2 qt and the oil was clean enough you could see light through it as it drained.

I say that to say this...
MOST engines will last like crazy if you take care of them.
Sure, there's always lemons... But it's more often our (the users) fault, in my opinion.

Clean fuel, clean air, clean oil, and a safe temperature = longevity almost every time.

Well said. That is a lot of hours on the 5.4 by the way. I've heard they can last a long time in spite not being a diesel :D

it is amazing how long those ford triton V-8"s last especially considering how many feet of timing chains they have inside them. I would think that'd be their weak link but I guess not.

I'm certainly not claiming them to be bulletproof, but I don't think you could ask for more than 10k perfect hours out of one.

To be honest, that's a lot of hours on ANY engine. Sure, Diesel engines last longer than gas, no doubt -- but a 10k hour Diesel engine is way past break-in. :)

I'll always stand by it. Clean oil, gas, air and temperature is the key. Hard work doesn't hurt it much as long as it's reasonable.

Kinda like our bodies... Take care of yourself (even if you work hard all the time) and you'll be exponentially healthier than someone who lives on bacon grease, cigarettes, and beer. :)
