yanmar diesel life expectancy? how many hrs u have?

mine has 3100 hours and has no issues at all. I think it still has several years/hours of life left in it. It's gone 20 years and I think another 10 is definitely do-able. I've changed TDH a few times. Only reason I'm thinking of selling is cuz I'm getting a smokin deal on a F935 mower. maybe I'll keep the 430 and sell the F935.

3100 hours? Sounds like it is just breaking in. Still a lot of life in that engine.

haha, like your answer too Magnum (sorry, couldn't resist)!!

JD tank, what province you in? 7 months of rain sounds like BC. 25 and tractors? what's wrong with that. My 18 y/o loves tractors so much, he took heavy equipment course, runs hay baler, cutter, wrappers, etc.., and has been doing that for 3 years.

as far as traction, my brother works for a landscaper. they plow our rare, limited snow with ride-on mowers/chains. works fine. AWD would only have been a nice feature for you for re-sale, but since you will keep long term, buy for what works for you. My 430 is pretty heavy and it gets stuck on my fairly flat property when i make the mistake of going into my low wet spots. I have diff lock, but turf tires like to spin. I shift it into neutral and pull out with quad/winch.

my neighbour bought a cool Bobcat cuz they made him a deal he couldn't refuse. amazing what he can do with it. it is something worth considering when you decide to go CUT. he's trying to sell his 2 Foton tractors now.

Who can explain why a 3 cylinder Yanmar would shake bad at lower RPM's?
It's not the engine mounts, or drive shaft.
At higher RPM it's smooth.

Simple - it is a mechanically-governed engine without tight speed control (no need for in vehicle applications). Adding more accurate camshafts or electronics or torsional vibration dampers drives costs up significantly. At higher rpm, those vibrations are damped due to many more cylinder firings spread out over the same time period.

Yep, in BC. I am in the Lower Mainland, Pitt Meadows to be exact. I am a Prairie boy, dragged out here by love to start a life with my now fiance. Truthfully speaking, I do not like it here that much, but she is happy and I get to play with my tractor.

I can think of quite a few reasons as to why this place isn't good.

1. Cost of living. BC gets its gasoline from Alberta oil. So does Washington. Washington sells the same gas we sell, for about 30 - 40 cents per liter, LESS than here. ICBC has the most expensive car insurance in Canada except for Newfoundland and Ontario. Property is extremely overvalued here. The values in the Lower Mainland of BC are inflated simply because people THINK it is worth so much. One day the real estate around here will collapse, because it is unaffordable. Your healthcare is not rolled into your income tax like it is in most other Provinces. People here boast about low income tax rates. Add your medical plan costs on top of your income tax, and you are paying more than most Provinces that have it rolled in with your income tax.

2. Weather. It rains 7 months of the year here. For half the year, it is dark when you go to work in the morning, and dark when you get home for dinner. It is overcast for months at a time with no sunshine exposure for weeks upon weeks. This is unhealthy for the mind, let me assure you!! You get a few months of sunshine, and the rest of the year sucks, plain and simple. Give me the bitter cold and Prairie snow, at least the sun shines with it!

3. Immigrants. Call me racist all you want, I am sick of Canada leaving the front door wipe open to everyone and anyone. 70% of the Lower Mainland is practically owned by immigrants, mostly Chinese. These people come over here with tons of money and buy everything up. Soon enough, you will find these people will call the shots and hold all the property, they pretty much do already. It seems impossible for 90% of immigrants, regardless of heritage, to safely operate a motor vehicle. They get in tons of crashes and than run off. Even if they are caught, car insurance rates skyrocket because of the hundreds, if not thousands of fender benders every single day. The main language in this country is English, but try and tell them that, they don't speak a word of it. You come over to my Country, you don't speak my language, AND you try to change this Country into where you came from, because it "offends" you. You left where you came from for a reason, yet you try and convert the place you came to, into the place you came from. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

4. Government corruption. Aside from Ontario, BC has the most corrupt Provincial Government in all of Canada. BC Hydro, Translink, ICBC, just to name a few, are run like personal piggy-banks for those in the top positions of these crown corporations. They each receive billions, yes, BILLIONS of dollars each year, yet they claim they need more money. It was just in the news that the top earners at Translink, all gave themselves more raises this year. The average income for the top dogs at Translink is $350,000 per year. Each year they give themselves $20,000 raises. Than the next morning you read the paper and see Translink saying they need more money. Build more tolls, tax the people to death!

5. Tolls. Fuel has tax on it for one reason, road maintenance. Property taxes go to roads in your local area, and parts of your income tax go to roads in your Province, at least they are suppose to. There are multiple taxes in place already that give more than sufficient funds for bridges and roads. Still, the local Government wants to introduce a tax where you pay for every KM you drive. Every single time your odometer ticks over one more number, you pay. Than you pay a toll for each bridge you cross. So let me get this straight. I am suppose to purchase a $30,000 vehicle, to keep the economy going. Than once I have it, I need to insure it with the only available option in this Province, that is corrupt with very high prices. Once I can leave the dealership, I need to fill the vehicle with overpriced/over-taxed gasoline. Than I need to pay for every KM I drive to get it home. Than I need to pay for maintenance and up-keep too.....absolute stupidity! The Government has never taken in more cash in the history of human existence, yet they cry wolf and say the safes are empty.

6. Wasted money. Something that really bothers me is salted roads. This is the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. It rarely freezes, and IF we get snow, it lasts for 24 hours, and is basically slush. I was a long haul trucker for years, with over 1,000,000 KM under my belt. I have driven in conditions you simply would not believe unless I could get you in the passenger seat for a trip. Even with NO SNOW on the ground, if the temperature nears freezing, they spend thousands of dollars to run trucks, pay crews, buy salt, and spread it on the roads. There is no ice, no snow, yet your paying crews $30 an hour, in a $100,000 truck, to spread salt...you don't even need. Wow.

I will stop here because I think you get my point. I only stick around for my fiance. She was born and raised here and right now her heart is still here. The other thing that keeps me here is that we live on property her parents own. It is an 8 acre parcel that we could never afford. We are very fortunate and they rent it to us for an affordable amount. For the most part I begrudgingly go to work everyday, come home and play with my toys. Put up with bumper to bumper traffic in the morning and in the afternoon, all to get up the next morning and do it all over again.

Yep, a man will do some strange things for the love of a woman.

Like every area, BC has things it needs to improve on. It is a beautiful area that many appreciate. It is not for everyone, but it is is a great place to live for many.

I would 100% agree that the govt. of almost everywhere needs to get with the program.

The small diesels are fine little engines, but 10,000 hours might be optimistic. That would correspond to something like 500,000 miles on a road vehicle. Some engines will run that long, but 5000 hours might be a more realistic expectation if it's well taken care of.

my JD 4300 has 3480 hours on it and it starts, runs, and operates like it had 200 hours. 20,000 hours for most any diesel is not an unrealistic expectation provided they are maintained properly. 5000 hours is a joke as most any gasoline engine will last that long. i read in a boating magazine that the average lifespan before requiring a rebuild of a gasoline marine engine is 1000 hours, and 20,000 hours for a diesel. i would be more concerned with things like hydrostatic transmission, (though mine still works fine) hydraulics, pumps, axle seals, and damage inflicted by the dealership's mechanics. things wear out from friction. keep it greased, new oil, filters, and fluids every 200 hours, and store it in a rain and UV free environment. oh, and don't loan it to retards or let them operate it. don't even let them sit on it.

Diesel engines can last longer than gas engines generally speaking. While this can be true it should be remembered that for many years the diesel engine rpms were much lower, now some of these newer diesels are turning at high speeds. I suspect this will lead to a much shorter life span. I would not expect my small Yanmar diesels to last as long as the heavy slow turning diesels of the past. So far I have been very pleased with the newer small high output Yanmar diesels and don't see myself going back to gas mowers anytime soon.
