we could not get the ring off to get started an yes im talking about the seal that is behind the pto shaft the one that keeps it from leaking oil out the front by the pto thanks earl

Carey's drawing may be decieving but it would look to me like everything has to come off the tail of the pinion shaft. Would that seal slip over the shaft splines if the retaining ring was not there?
