Yanmar Thermostart

They may be bullet proof, but after using both, my opinion is that the thermostart system is not nearly as effective as glow plugs.
It is hard to compare the two, because no two tractors start exactly the same. Some will start with no help, at fairly low temps. and some will not. So I would guess, one is just as effective as the other, or the companys would only use the one way. Just my opinion of course, so one might be better than the other.

Thanks for the info! I paid about $35 for a block heater, so I consider $75 very reasonable for the heater kit.

Used to go to Central Farm & Family and they'd have an assortment of block heaters on the rack... I'm guessing/remembering the avg. price ~ $12... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

Now, Deere wants $55. for my block heater... /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

I replace more thermostarts than I do glow plugs, and there is a significant price difference. Haven’t found a Napa yet that couldn’t get me the glow plugs. Every other brand we pull out of the container I know will fire right up with glow plugs, I never know with Yanmars. I remember when I was trying to get my 1500 started in freezing weather pouring diesel in a little cup I didn’t think the idea was so cleaver.

I know I probably could have gone the generic route, but what I got from Yanmar was really nice. I just took out a threaded plug in the side of the engine block, and replaced it with the heater. Now that I have one, I know what to look for. But I didn't want to have the tractor sitting without anti-freeze while I took the threaded plug to the store to look for one that would work. I bought the one that I knew would fit. Chances are, its the same one for your Deere. Yanmar parts are generally less expensive than Deere.

The intake manifold looks a bit different than I remember on my YM1301D, but it might be the same. I wonder what that one for the 790 would cost.

The cheat on older models with the cup is to use a syringe to replace the cup, and squirt a bit of kero into the chamber.
