Was gifted a tiller from retiring farmer. Needs a few tines, she said to fill up the gear boxes, lube joints. Looks to be 2 gear boxes, top along by hitch and one on the side for the chain, I presume.

I'm glad to have this tool as my shoulders and pulling start ropes days are coming to an end if I want to feed myself when I'm 70. Any tips? Here's some pics. Sorry I didn't mean to upload all of the full size pics AND the thumbnails.... Thanks!

Looks really dry.....give it plenty of grease, PB Blaster, oil.....

maybe take one of the tines off and take it to a farm store like Tractor Supply to match it with a generic. Might even be easier to replace all of the tines with new ones that match if you can't find an exact replacement.

probably don't even need to replace the missing tines; just see how it does without them; just make an extra pass.

I may have the exact manual for this tiller, however, the images are at such odd camera angles that I can't even figure it out. From the large Yanmar logo, it could be a USA made model and not a Japan made model. I've not seen a Japan made model with a huge logo like that as Yanmar in the YM logo era. It's a mystery.

IF you can supply pixs from standing behind it looking down onto it and another one standing in front of it looking down on it, the arrangement of the gearbox and the shaft positions would tell the better story.

Yes, clean it up. Get it in prime working condition. Not sure if I would use PB Blaster on a tiller meant for growing your food. Those forever chemicals are totally not good for your health.

Yes, there has been a good deal of tiller discussion in the past month on this thread.
Yanmar RS1202 Tiller project

Once we can identify the tiller models, we'll know what tines are usable on the attachment. Most models can take 2 or 3 different tine types for different ground action.

Excellent advice - all of it! I'll get some better pics tomorrow in the daylight. I just got in from tying up tomatoes and mowing.

Thank you!

@bmaverick what is in PB Blaster that is of concern?
Read the MSDS or SDS data sheet. I wouldn't want any of those chemicals touching my garden soil.

I do use PB on my daily driver for vehicle repairs. :)

Normal motor oils and synthetic oils all came from the ground at one time. Those would have less impact on the soil. And there are microbes that will break down oils in the soil quickly in a season. Not so with PB, WD40, or the like.

PB is an antifreeze based chemical. This will harm the garden soil, kill plants, and not at all good for wildlife if food plots are made.

For tractors on organic farms, the antifreeze is changed to RV Pet Safe formulas that align with FDA approvals for use. Sierra Antifreeze is propylene glycol based. The same stuff in salad dressings, BBQ sauces, gummy bears and the like. It's also used to fill tractor tires on organic farms, yet pricey.

Ah ha, it has many ques to the RS Tiller series. If you can measure the side-to-side walls on the 'inside', then we'll know if it's a RS1300 or an RS1500 tiller.

It measures 48"side to side inside. And I've been taking off the tines, many are loose and theblts are ruty, so I am cleaning them up or going to replace. Looks like 2 diff size/styles tines. Will post pics once tey're all off.

Or they came loose and got lost in the field. Here's what I've got. I have to head to Tractor Supply to pick up feed anyway will see if they carry any spares. Looks like i am missing a dozen. Odd number of times, total, 31.

I think we have just seen the first Frankensteinmar tiller.

Looks like prior owner replaced missing tines with smaller ones off something else. Are the small ones sloppy in their mounting slots?

It's pricey, but stainless steel 316 or 316L bolts are way stronger than the generic stainless steel 18-8 bolts. Since it's a tiller pounding on the soil, I would invest in those bolts and nylocks. :)

48-inches = 1220mm. Thus, the Yanmar tiller is a RS1200 type. I'll look tonight for the RS120X variants to help you figure out exactly the right model.

only one is different - the others are all smaller or slender. I'm guessing she may have had another tiller and just popped it on there. It's missing like a dozen tines. but they all fit right.

TSC was useless. They didnt' even have the right size/kind bolts

I'll have to go to our real hardware store - they also need to be low profile heads so they embed so you can turn the nut. Some where replaced with odds and ends.

All were rusty.

Ah you just posted.

OK, since the Yanmar logo marking and the color don't match up, the RS1200 and it's related RSxx00 family are in the first PDF. The second PDF is the RC1200, somewhat related, but added for good measure as your tiller is difficult otherwise to identify.

The 48-inches really narrows things down in a good way to the 1200mm (1.2M) width size.

Good eye! Goodness, you are right, they are everso slightly different in size! I didn't even notice as I was stacking, just that some were slanted one way and others another. Lol wow. She said she's seen sets on eBay before. Once I figure out which is correct I will take a look.
