ok guys just completed the pto oil seal job but when i was at the bacck end looking forward i saw what i think is a dirt seal on the left back axle side was loose so had a look but notice the back wheel has about a inch of side movement i take it it sounds like a bearing?

Yes that sounds like the outer bearing is bad. I had the same happen to my 1500.I would suggest that you do both sides. You will have to pull the axle cases on both side also. 30 years of crud doesn't allow the bearings to come out easily and they are snug on the shafts. Also if you need to do that you will be disturbing the old oil seals that are in the axle housings so I would suggest them also. To pull the axles you need to remove the internal PTO shaft so you can remove the bolts that attach the shaft to the inner gear #25. It's not a quick job and you will most likely need a press to disassemble and reassembly the parts.I may have some pictures of when I did mine. I will post them if I have them.

I had to replace an outer bearing on mine years ago. As I recall, I did not remove the PTO shaft. I removed the plate on the bottom of the gear housing and loosened the bolt in the axle from there. Not a quick and easy task. The inner seal was a bit of a problem to find.

how did you find getting the bearing of the easiest way?you dont happen to remember the bearing size or the seal size? did you just replace one bearing and one seal? thanks

The bearing numbers and seal sizes are given on Hoyes parts list. You can google the bearing part number and get sizes. They will all be in metric. For instance, the red 1500 outer axle bearing is a 6209-2rs. Googling that will find the bearing to be 45mm bore, 85mm od, 19mm width with double seals. I'll conclude by saying Hoye is not making big profits on their bearings. Of course if you live in Scotland the shipping would eat you alive.

The sizes are also given for the seals.

yes hoye have a good price on there items for sure o i have the green ym are they the same bearings? i was talking to a guy who said he had a compact and could not get the parts for the axle . he said the engineer made him up a sleeve that took the play away on his old compact he said the took the wheel of then the rear axle hub and measured it and made a sleeve to fit over the shaft and took up the side movement play?? has any body herd of doing that?

Hoyes parts list shows the 6209-2rs on both green and red but they do show different seals. Interesting.

Are you asking how I got the bearing off? That was not a problem; it had destroyed itself.

Sorry, I do not remember the bearing or seal sizes. As I recall, the outer bearing and inner bearings are the same size. The outer bearing was sealed. It occurred to me that it would be possible to replace the inner bearing with a sealed bearing and eliminate the need for the inner seal, tho that would be an expensive way to avoid replacing the seal. BTW, this is on a red 1500D. The green version might differ.

Yes, I replaced only the one side--the outer seal, the inner seal and the outer bearing. That was about 10 years ago and there have been no problems on the other side.
