You'll need a pretty strong generator. I had bad luck trying to weld, even at 30 amps, using a 4 Kw Honda generator with my 225Amp Lincoln AC welder.

Thats when I gave up on making my AC welder work with a portable generator and hooked up 3 car batteries instead, for short remote welds it works pretty good. See my previous thread, I posted several pictures towards the end.Battery Welding

Is there a correct or preferred angle between the stick and the metal? Novice here too.

Yes regor66,
There are 2 angles to be concerned with. Work angle which is the angle of the rod in relation to the workpiece joint. And the push or drag angle.

Y'all mind another keyboard hunter?? I have had, for quite a few years, an Airco line welder, 225 amps, 20% duty cycle, operated from a forty amp breaker....and believe me, it aint enough breaker...... have put up with it, sheer stupidity, I guess, and have welded up to inch and a quarter stock, multiple passes, using E6011, one eigth inch rod, a rod and half at a time....because otherwise, I would trip the breaker.... since have purchased a 200 AMP Lincoln, DC welder, 1955, so that means before aluminium wiring. Thingy is right on, on all his suggestions, IMHO. Sometimes one can find an excelent welding handbook from one of the welder maufacturers, that covers the basics quite well, with pics. Hope you don't mind my intrusion, have just found this site, and think it quite unique. Have a good one, R.

Found a welding textbook from 1970 called Modern Welding at a garage sale yesterday for a quarter!! I've never had any instruction on the stick.I'm getting better...slowly...but it'll be nice to have some idea what I really 'sposed to be doing.But if it has to be pretty,I can go down to the shop and use the MIG...(ssssh).
I found a nice catalog at the welding supplier that has great instruction on MIG,TIG and gas welding..little on the stick though...and it was FREE!!

Thats a great find, Bobodu....free is a great price, like it a lot! Something I have to find is info on welding with a wire feed, bought one a year ago, and haven't used it yet....trying to get my shop built so I can get everything set up in it.....kinda stariting to look like a centenial project.....take a hundred years to get it done!!
