YM1702D wants to die when returning to idle?

I start my tractor at 1500 , And after it warms up I never idle lower then 1000. If I am working I stay 2000 too 2200 RPM .

Well what I'm trying to say at setting the idle speed is that since my tractor has a pull knob to kill the engine the hand throttle should have a range from a low idle speed of 800ish to a max of 2600 something or another which is max engine RPM. Mine as it sits if I close the hand throttle all the way the engine tried to idle at about 650 - 700. If I adjust the linkage a bit I should be able to close it and have it idle at 800. That way I'm not absent mindedly letting the engine die when all I want is to slow down to an idle. If 800 is where it should idle at then there is no sense in the hand throttle having a setting below that is there?

Well I tried my little experiment. I set the hand throttle at 800 rpm by the tach and then used the foot throttle. Full closed the hand throttle idles the engine at about 600 rpm too. So when I set it at 800 and then used the foot throttle and lifted off the foot throttle it’d drop to about 700-750 and then even out at 800 where I set it. No dieing and it idles a lot smoother at 800 then it does at 600. So it seems I should set the low stop on the hand throttle at about 800 rpm and the high stop seems to already be at about 2600 or maybe a little more. Is there some hidden reason (not obvious to a newbie) I shouldn’t set the low stop at 800 rpm?

Thanks,
Bryan

You are trying to invent a new way for it to operate. It operates the way I said previously. Operate as if there were no foot throttle and you will have it. As I said before, a lot of them don't even have foot throttles, it is an option.

All or the 3 cylinder Yanmars I have ever sold have had a foot throttle. I think it was just optional on the 2 cylinder models. If it has a fuel shutoff cable, there's no reason for the hand throttle to be set below a comfortable idle.

My 2020 idles at 800 RPMs. I would adjust the idle stop on the injector pump to what ever RPM I wanted it to operate at. I leave hand throttle at idle and use the foot throttle all the time.

You are probably right about the 3 cylinder models, there was a long thread back in 2002 on the subject and it appears all of the 3cyl's had them. Seems like an awful lot of work mowing using the foot throttle, though.

I like the foot throttle. I guess to me it feels more like driving.

To each his own I guess about foot vs hand, but I never understood the foot throttle on a tractor.. Your foot will move every time you hit an uneven spot. Diesel engines in general were intended to run at the optimum peak HP/Tq RPM range, so to me the foot throttle is unnecesary.. I set my throttle to 1000rpm to idle and 2200 for PTO speed, never use the foot throttle. In fact the only reason I know it has one is because when I was looking it over to buy, I noticed it was bent downward..

Well I haven't changed the minimum setting on the hand throttle yet but I’ll chime in on the hand vs. foot throttle. I like having both. Been using the box blade this evening and it nice to be able to turn around to look behind you and easily throttle up or down so the foot throttle is great. Also found a few spots where I had to hit the diff lock to get enough traction and you can’t foot throttle and diff lock at the same time so the hand throttle it is. The clutch is pretty on or off so it’s nice when moving around like that to use the foot throttle so you don’t lurch so much. I could also understand that the hand throttle would be the way to go for mowing or plowing or what have you though.
