YM1702D wants to die when returning to idle?

I use strictly the hand throttle when I'm mowing for constant speed. The foot throttle is great when moving a pile of dirt with a front loader one bucket at a time and constant gear changes.

Ok that is what I do too. Since I use my loader more I use my foot throttle more. But to mow I need the constant 2200 rpm to have 540 at the PTO. I think I would have a hard time with just a hand throttle because I need my hand to operate the loader.

Tractors are made to run at a constant rpm, not changing all the time. You aren't suppose to work one at less than around 1800 rpms, so in most all cases the foot throttle is of little use. Maybe in Japan where they were made to be used there was a good reason for them, but not here. Not many tractors built here have ever had foot throttles, as there was no good use for them. If you are using it, you are probably using it at too low a speed for the good of the tractor.

Maybe I am. I've been setting the hand throttle to about 1500rpm and using the foot throttle from there. Would it be ok if I set it to 1800rpm and then used my foot throttle?

If it wasn't meant to be used it wouldn't have it on it. I had a 1100 and a 1105 Massey Ferguson that both had foot throttles. Roxy, you're just fine using it that way.

Ok, that's good. Whenever I borrowed my neighbor's Oliver before I had a tractor he always had me using the foot throttle too. Sorry if I inadvertantly hijacked someone's thread, my apologies.

My JD 2520 72 model 70HP has a foot throttle on it. But I don't use it much, Just when I move it to hook some thing up.

I dont see a problem with that, as long as you dont idle down too low or run too low of an RPM for a given task (lugging the engine).. Do you notice much of a difference when using the foot pedal from 1500? All in all, what ever works for you in your particular case will probably be fine..

Ok, thanks for the responses. I haven't noticed the engine straining at all so I will assume the tractor is happy with what I'm doing. I always let it warm up for 5 minutes at about 1000rpm (it doesn't seem to like 800) before I do anything with it. I also let it cool down at about 1000 for 2 minutes before I shut it down. I do like the foot throttle for using the loader and driving it when not mowing. However, if I'm doing anything wrong, let me know that too. Prior to owning this tractor, every tractor I used was different, but most of them were old ag tractors with gas engines (Olivers, Masseys and a Farmall). A few months ago I rented a TLB with a hydrostat to use for backhoe work. The rental place told me where to set the throttle (high) to use the backhoe. Obviously I wasn't moving the tractor around while I was using the hoe. I planted it where I wanted it, put it up on the hydraulic stands and just used the hoe. I guess to my way of thinking, backhoe work is a lot harder on a tractor than just moving some manure in my loader.

My 1602D has both foot and hand throttles, and I use both, depending on the circumstances. I think setting the hand idle at 800 ( or whatever number makes it run smoothly) and using the foot throttle when appropriate makes all the sense in the world. I use the hand throttle when I want to run something at constant speed, but when I'm using the FEL, the box blade or just driving somewhere I use the foot throttle. I think the circumstances dictate which way you go, and you should make the decision based on what you're doing at the time. It's your tractor, use it the way you want.........
