That’s w new valve springs..
I wouldn’t push it past 2800.,
But is your machine..
Make sure the decomposition lever isn’t interfering and floating the valves..(if equipped)

BTW.. did u ever figure out if that pump had gaskets under the barrels ??

Yes, once I realized the gaskets were copper washers. I replaced them and the orings. I hear your concerns on the age and overall condition of the engine. I adjusted what I think is the high idle... I found it very interesting that the wire locks had been removed. Obviously it had been adjusted at some point before.
The decompression lever wasn't making contact when rotating the engine over manually. I'm not sure how to check while running. I'll have to go back under the valve cover to adjust the valves. I didn't adjust previously as I wanted to minimize making changes and adjustments until I had it running. The valve lash seemed excessive to me. However, I didn't break out the feeler gauge and measure it.

I've had a little more time to tinker with the tractor. It holds high speed very well. I ran it about 20 minutes between 1500 and 2600 RPMs with most of that time at 1500.
It doesn't like to hold the low idle very well -- Say around 500 RPMs. If I'm not careful it will die. Does anyone know what the low idle should be for a Yanmar YM220? There's a lot of slop in the throttle linkage so it might just need adjusting. I'll have to look at the Parts manual to see if there are bushings or other wear items missing that need to be replaced.

I have no idea if your machine is like the YM240 or not
