YM3110D Overheating - Time for new radiator?

That's what I have on My 2000. But it's more of a Bottle with Hot and cold on it and no gauge though. And if either of my lights even Flickers or come on. Oil or the Water Temp. it would get shut off immediately. And then look for a problem...

Is this thermostat a liquid filled bulb type, that when the water gets hot, a liquid within the thermostat bulb expands/contracts and moves the gauge ?

I don't know the answer to that, and I'm not where I could look at it today. However it works, it seems to be very consistent. I have checked it many times with the laser thermometer and it gives the same numbers based on the gauge time after time.

My YM2000B, same gauge, never gets off the 1/4 mark until the radiator screen begins to clog with chaff, no matter how hard I work it. or ambient temps. Been working that way for 17 years.

Thanks, that's really interesting. Have you ever tried to measure the temp and see how hot it is at the 1/4 mark? I will check mine and see how hot 1/4 is, but if the gauge is consistent that should only be 130 or so. Mine will climb to about 150 within 10 minutes of cranking it. It will stay in that range if the work is real easy, but any hard work at all will move it to the center mark and 160. For instance, I mowed the lawn with it and it held 160 for an hour.

It has a thermostat and a water pump, and Fredrick's put a 7 lb radiator cap on it. I changed the cap a few days ago but it had no effect. I have no idea of how to compare mine to the models that operate without a water pump.

ok, Reason I ask is, I was in the HVAC business for many yrs. I also worked on appliances (ranges, fryers and such)

These appliances (like some others) have thermostats that operate off a bulb with a liquid inside that expands and puts pressure on a diaphragm to control temp. like these mechanical gauges operate

Over the yrs with the expansion and contraction these thermostats will began to get out of calibration and have to be replaced.

Just wondering if it's possible for this to happen to these old temp gauges as they work about the same ?

Another subject is, measuring the temp an laser (infrared thermometer) When they first came out, many HVAC companies bought them thinking they would be accurate in measuring them. on refrigerant lines and other parts of the HVAC system.
We found them to be inaccurate at measuring temp on HVAC units.
Depending on where you shot the laser on the equipment, you would get a different reading. On top of a pipe would give a different reading than on the side of the pipe, etc, another reading.

I'm not saying I wouldn't trust your readings with that laser, but I would verify.
It wouldn't hurt to purchase a new mechanical gauge at the auto parts, on line, etc, (with actual numbers on it) and install it to verify your temp is within range

But if you are satisfied the temps and gauge are operating properly. then. just leave things as is and run the tractor

Good luck !

I put a "calorimeter" on the Fordson. That's an "assisted" thermosiphon system. (It does hold over five gallons however."

Without the front blind pulled up about 3/4 to closed tight, the engine never gets to 180 degrees in summer. In winter, the blind is always pulled shut, and unless the snow is really deep, (blowing a full stream over the banks) the coolant temp never makes 180.

THERMOSTAT: Yanmar Tractor Parts
This is what the Yanmar tstat looks like, same as all automotive tstats. I don't believe the YM3110 has one, although the 336, 2010, 2220 and a few others do. A spring just heats up, expands and opens a valve at 160*. located at the base of the upper rad hose.

Have you considered your gauge is not calibrated or just reads lower?

Take your IR thermometer and bush hot in 97f for 3 hours and get off and measure the top of the radiator, I bet it's hotter than 160.

Running the tractor at fast idle will cool it faster than cutting off. The temp can still rise when off. Now if it's cause your not pumping water, have no water to pump from a catastrophic failure or something is stopped up this method will probably make it hotter than shutting off. But if you know the screen is plugged, bring it to a fast idle and clean the screen .

Is he talking about what controls the gauge and not the actual thermostat in the engine? At least that's how I took it at first?
