Domush, not to be a pessimist, but I would be exploring a replacement for at least two if not all of those sleeves. #2 is just not going to fly.

Yeah, the more I stare at #2, the more I'm wondering if I should be replacing the liner. I think the other 2 should squeak by but #2 just has a ton of pits in it. What I don't know is if it will still burn oil or just not put out as much HP. A slight lack of HP I can live with, but I don't want to do all of this work and investment just to have it leave a stream of smoke behind me still.

Also, in honing the cylinders, I was under the impression the bumps in #2 and #3 were raised, but now that I have them enlarged on my big screen they appear to be valleys, not peaks. This would make sense, seeing as the rings would carve any peaks away, but wouldn't touch valleys. The hone also would not touch the valleys, which explains why the liners still appear so dark in sections. That's a lot of room for combustion to escape into the crankcase and oil to slip into the burn chamber. I think if I hone #2 to the point where the valleys are down enough to be flush the liner will be too wide for the piston, fixing one issue and causing another, possibly more disastrous one.

The issue comes in.. is replacing the liner easy enough for me to do myself? I'll need to track down a liner-puller if that is the case. I'm on the fence.. a liner costs $150, which is 1/2 the cost of the entire job right now. $470 for a rebuild still isn't awful, but that does add quite a bit of sting to the cost. We're talking about a tractor which still doesn't have a 1st and 2nd gear, so resale down the road will still be abysmal.

I do know if I don't decide soon, it'll cost me another $15 for shipping, as it would be a second order.

important note to anyone following this thread: I found out 1/2 way into this thread cylinder #1 is the one towards the rear of the tractor. So up until post #41, I had the cyl #'s reversed. Sorry, I can't edit those posts any longer to fix them

I could really use a few more opinions on the #2 liner. What will happen if I use it as is? A little smoke? Tons of smoke? Knocking? Another broken ring?

EDIT: the more I think about it, the less I'm willing to risk it. It'll at least cost me another $65+shipping for a new head gasket if I have to come back to it. Ordering up a new #2 now.

What is everyone's opinion on the #3 liner with that smaller pitted area? Worth the added $150 expense? I just can't afford much more, so I'm hoping to get by with just replacing #2, but if #3 is going to be a serious problem I don't want to throw good money after bad.

California had corrected my post and, once fixed, deleted his post. Causing mass confusion.. this post will self destruct in 5.. 4.. 3 ;)

Actually i did read it and now see that it has been gone, i think where you said that "on this forum you can't edit your posts"?

Your not a mod are you California (at least you dont have Mod under your name like the others)? If your not a mod how do you edit someone elses posts? Thats a new one on me.

No, not a mod. I doubt they would have me. :D . (but I am a moderator on a couple of unrelated boards).

Here's the whole story: He said something and I suggested something else. I deleted my post as soon as I saw he had made the suggested correction to his own post. Because after his edit, my post was irrelevant.

That's all there is to it.

Overall, I think it is a good idea for each of us to delete our own posts when we realize they pulled a useful discussion off-topic.

I've been following this thread with baited breath it's incredible and opted not to throw my two cents in cause everyone seems to have it under control, however, when I noticed the turn to sleeve replacement I thought I could throw a thought out there. I used to work for a diesel engine shop, great experience, and we would re-sleeve engines all the time, but were rebuilding engines all the time. As a fringe benefit the owner would let employees work on their stuff and we helped a guy re-sleeve his old mercedes. I know cost has been the driving factor here but if you could find a shop to do that or get the puller, re-sleeving is the way to go from my experience. I don't know the cost of sleeves for theses motors but with Yanmar building so many deisel engines it might be worth searching out parts, such as sleeves.

I'll sit back and continue watching, awesome job!

Cost of sleves per his earlier threads... i think ~$150/per cyl.

I saw that but was more leaning towards the performance (i.e. propper) after all the valleys/humps were fond and the discovery of two of the sleeves in less than desireable shape is all. Cost/Benefit.
