You favorite old-time TV Western?

Many of my favorites as a kid, I don't care for that much now, Gene Autry, The Rifleman (Chuck Connors has an insane look to him), Roy Rogers, I really hate Bonanza now but watched it every week along with Gunsmoke. I loved Wild, Wild West as a kid but it is really hokie now. Maverick, Tales of Wells Fargo, Death Valley Days, Wanted Dead or Alive is still good to watch today and of course any John Wayne movie I can watch 100 times.

In the day, I thought Bonanza was great. But in trying to watch some of the old episodes, they can't compare with Gunsmoke. Bonanza is really kinda cheesy, although the characters pretty much carry the show...who needs a good script.

Very true... watching shows where people died of disease, hypothermia, poisonous things isn't as exciting.

I've seen both fictional and documentary films of Donners Pass and you are correct. Some things are better read about.

When it comes to historical events...in many cases they are one in the same...
...documented "eyewitness" accounts are basically hearsay...
five different people can see the same event and there will be five different accounts...

If I remember right, they were a couple toward the end, but he was always called away every time they made plans to spend time together.

Not being in the USA we were limited, trying to think of what we got:
Bonanza, Big Valley, Rawhide, Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke, F Troop (???), Roy Rogers, Gene Autry.
There are a few mentioned that I haven't heard of and I have probably missed a few too.

Since you brought up F Troop, I loved it and its still funny today.

I read an article about 60's comedies -- basically questioning if the Brady Bunch was over rated. They pulled together a panel of writers, producers, critics, cultural analysts [whatever that is] and so forth and analyzed the sitcoms. Their conclusion was that F Troop was the best show of the 60's.

One thing they noted was the star power of the guest stars. They had Don Rickles as a crazed Indian, Paul Lind [remember Hollywood Squares] as the Burglar of Banff [extra emphasis on the second "f"], and so on. Its neat to see these people working in their prime.

Not a Western, but "McHale's Navy" had me rolling in the floor at times. I'll never forget the episode when Tim Conway had infiltrated the enemy camp dressed as a Japanese soldier. He was waiting in a line with some real Japanese soldiers, who tried to make conversation...he would just bow and same something like "Ah, So". One wanted to see pictures of his girlfriend, so he grabbed his wallet, opened it to the picture of a beautiful blond, with the signature "Love, Lillian". The Japanese soldier says "Ruv, Rirrian?" I liked to wet my pants. I laughed so long I missed most of the rest of the show. :D

I wouldn't argue against that that too hard.
