Hmmm... not sure I agree. For example, I used to think that Twilight Zone was downright spooky! While there were some classic shows, when watching most of them today they just seem downright silly to me. Might be just me of course.
Looking back at many of the old westerns the themes seem similarly strained. The cartoonish portrayal of virtually all Indians, good guys just shrugging off a rifle slug in the arm, the amazingly well dressed good looking "frontier women", etc. etc. I guess the concept of "concealed carry" was unknown given that almost every man was packing iron-- and who on earth walks around all day carrying a rifle?!
Of course none of this has deterred me in the least from watching 'em all. I probably have over 40 episodes of Gunsmoke on our DVR right now.
Bonanza, Gunsmoke and The Lone Ranger were my favorites. Old enough to have seen the last few years of Bonanza and Gunsmoke as they aired. Lone Ranger was always repeats.
As a bit of on topic trivia...One of the most profound writers of old west stories, screenplays and TV scripts is Elmore Leonard...many may recognize him for more contemporary novels and movies but he really has written a lot of old west stuff
