You Know You Are Old When

I started working at a newspaper in 1987. Obits weren't free then at our paper. What was free was a Death Notice. Pretty much just name, city, date of death, and services pending.

We lucked out when Dad passed regarding obituary… several large circulation papers ran very nice stories on Dads passing and it meant a lot to mom and family.

One even wrote about how they met and their first date…

I almost missed my older brother's funeral. I was wondering about the date and called my sister in law about it, she said it was on the radio, I said I don't listen to the radio.

County has 5.8k population so they put funerals and anniversaries on the air.

I don't think so and they actually look pretty good. Straighten out your hand and tip it forward a little and those few crinkles will vamoose.

On the other hand, if you suddenly find older people opening doors for you and hot babes excuse themselves when it's you that bumped into them, then you're old. For now, you're just marking time.

This is the best defining factor I've heard yet. I'm going to have to remember that.

Today we had a new leather sofa delivered. The furniture company sent it new in a huge box so a couple hours ago I packed everything up and took it to our dumpster site 5M away. I had it tied & two large garbage cans for weight. I'm going down the main road 20 mph when you know what happened. Boom! And truck bed is empty...crap all over the road so I pull over w/ flashers. On other side this young pretty lady pulls over & helps me.
Back home the wife says "over the years I've helped so many old grandpas change their tire or get their car running again".

Yep! And I ran into two retired acquaintances in the peanut butter and jell isle.

I met my wife at work, we were the two young 20-something engineers assigned to work under three post-retirement senior engineers, in an effort to develop a "quick start" product for a tech company, while the rest of the technical staff worked on a larger long-term project that would be the company's main source of revenue years down the road.

The old guys were a hoot, one was an old Pennsylvania Dutch farm boy, and another (manager) was the classic bad boy -- drinking, smoking, fast cars, and flirting with the ladies -- in his 70's. They adored their young female engineer, and being from the Mad Men generation, gave our poor HR folks all sorts of heartburn.

One early morning, the old PA Dutch guy and I are in this old manager's office talking about a project, when my future wife walks in. The manager pauses mid-conversation, looks over at the PA Dutch guy and says, "doesn't our young one look particularly delicious today?"

The old Dutch farmer just shook his head and smiled, looked up at the manager and said, "careful, they're going to have to send you back to training, again"!

I don't think I've ever had as much fun at any job, as working with those crazy old men. Now I'm closer to the age they were then, than the age I was then.

Was your father, for lack of a better term, famous (or at least well-known in the community)? Usually papers will print a short obituary for free, but anything more than that costs.

When I was a construction superintendent we had young pretty project sales girls around. Conversations in my office would often turn to the office girls. One day my foreman told me to keep it quiet or I'd have to go to the ****** harassment training. I never missed a step, I said Who me?
'Hell, I been at this trade for 30 yrs. I can drink beer, swing a hammer, float a slab, and drive a tractor. I dam sure don't need any training to harass those office girls" We laughed till our bellies ached... Good Times
