Re: You might be a liberal if (chapter V)

My reply was in response to your second question. Here is a take on your question about the rape and murder of the child. Click the link and read the full story.
------------------------------------------------------------

Despite the disparity in the number of stories about Matthew Shepard and Dirkhising, that in itself is not ironclad proof of bias in the mainstream media. Suggestions that the mainstream media downplayed the Dirkhising story because of a pro-homosexual bias are circumstantial and not proof of bias in and of itself. The media has reported on other homosexual murderers; as Rich (1999) notes, “it’s sure done a poor job of keeping Jeffrey Dahmer and Andrew Cunanan, among others, a secret.” Cunanan was accused of killing five people, including fashion designer Gianni Versace, and a manhunt for him generated significant media coverage; Dahmer killed 17 men over 13 years.

Roberts (Barrett, 1999) suggests that “all news is relative to what else is going on at the time. ... You can argue that happenstance should not play a role in these things, but they do.” The ongoing debate over “hate crime” laws likely helped to drive coverage of the Shepard story, and it’s not a stretch to conclude, as Sullivan does (2001), that his death was exploited for political purposes. But it is also as easy to conclude that Dirkhising’s death was promoted by at least some conservatives in order to achieve political goals; the case has been used as a reason to defeat “hate crime” laws (Jacoby, 1999) and oppose greater participation of homosexuals in public life (Irvine, 2001). And it could be argued that using the case to paint the mainstream media as “liberal” and pro-homosexual is another part of a conservative political agenda; Sheldon (2001) suggests that the Dirkhising story was "spiked by a journalistic community co-opted by radical sex groups."

Conservatives have implied that both the Shepard and Dirkhising deaths both involved homosexuals, the two are equivalent, and therefore Dirkhising's death should have received the same coverage that Shepard's did. But the nature of the deaths themselves are different; Shepard's death has been classified as a hate crime which, generally speaking, tends to get attention from the mainstream media, while Dirkhising's death has been classified as a sex crime, which rarely gets national media attention. One of the few murder cases to receive national news coverage in which sex played a major factor was the "preppy murder" case of Jennifer Levin, who died in 1986 during apparent rough sex in New York's Central Park with Robert Chambers, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter. As Shipp (1999) writes, "A hate crime homicide such as Shepard's and, four months before that, James Byrd's in Jasper, Tex., is, 'a special kind of killing,' The (Washington) Post has editorialized. 'It tells a segment of American society that its physical safety is at risk.' Arkansas authorities have not characterized the Dirkhising death as a hate crime."

Re: You might be a liberal if (chapter V)

Soooooooooooooooooooooo

The media "thinks" (I know, I know, there's a whole thread unto itself) hate crimes are more newsworthy than others. Let me see..........a guy is dead, and.............a guy is dead. So why do they choose one and neglect the other..........huh?

That's why I oppose any and all crime classifications involving hate (which by the way should be termed hatred). It is yet another attempt to separate crimes by ideology; just like some want to do with the WTC attack. Crime is crime, legislation for alleged acts of hatred are a violation of the 1st amendment as it relates to free thought. We should punish the act, not the thought. Funny it's the self described bastions of free speech that don't get this......actually, it's not at all funny.

Bias - a mental leaning; partiality; prejudice; bent. Gee, mister, ain't that what we're talking about?

I'll say it again (and again and again, evidently) - "what a tangled web we weave"

Re: You might be a liberal if (chapter V)

If you want to be completely candid about this you'd have mentioned that Buchanan has a HUGE ax to grind with the Republicans and the media LOVES it so they give him all the attention he wants. Much like John McCain. Republicans claim neither.

Also, you certainly aren't claiming Bill Kristol to be a conservative, are you? You'd be alone on that one. Kristol, by some of the statements he's made over the last few years, seems to be more interested in getting his 15 seconds of "fame" than being guided by any principle.

You also didn't mention any errors that you found on the Media Reacher Center's web page.

Re: You might be a liberal if (chapter V)

Have you checked who these "large corporations" are that "control" the media. There is a "large secular jewish" contingent involved here and they sure as h-e-double hockey sticks are not conservative.

There is an incredible MYTH that large corporations are "all Republican all the time".

I certainly hope that you are not pretending that Chelsea and her shenanigans are covered proportionally to the Bush girs .... are you?????

Re: You might be a liberal if (chapter V)

I know who Jesse Dirkhising is.

He is the kid that sodomized to death by a couple rump rangers.

I don't know about this from, as Boone would have you believe, the large corporation controlled media.

Re: You might be a liberal if (chapter V)

Of the 3 largest newspapers in the country, the NY Times and Washington Post backed Gore and the LA Times is conspicuosly missing.

The national media representatives, in exit polling, have voted for either Clinton or Gore in the 85% ranger in each of the last 3 elections. I believe it shows, you believe it doesn't. Whatever.

In reality it should not have been close (number of papers endorsing one or the other). As a geographical statement, which newspapers represent - a geographical area, George W Bush won most of the US. You've probably seen "The Map". Bush should have had 3/4 or more of the newspapers if the newspapers were representing their readers, don't ya think???

Re: You might be a liberal if (chapter V)

Maybe I am wrong, but I view BOTH cases as 'hate crimes' because I am not trying to be 'politically correct' as some in some police dep't or sherriff's office might be. The leaders of these dep'ts rise and fall on their political positions; and therefore ; as would be the human tendency to do, base their decisions as to what 'type' of crime may have been committed! In the Dirkhising case, if there wasn't hate involved, it probably wouldn't have been committed; as with most violent crime. I also believe the perpetrators in both cases should have been dealt with in the same manner.
Swift and sure!!

Re: You might be a liberal if (chapter V)

But; let me add that the media definately IS biased- I just used the two cases to illustrate the fact. The media will ALWAYS cater to what sells; regardless of whether it is right, left , or out of joint; which I think is where most reporters are!! (My Opinion) They all stay in business by selling sensation; Tommy Brokejaw and company really aren't much different than the National Enquirer. Maybe we should have a Fed. mandate putting warning labels on the News. "CAUTION: this program may drive you nuts; if you aren't already!!"GOTTA go ; bye, bye.

Re: You might be a liberal if (chapter V)

Boone, Pat B. also said "The Nazis were not a threat to the U. S. after 1942", then had to eat his words when the Bush Administration and historians stated that Admiral Dönitz had asked ****** if he could use a U-Boat to launch V2s into New York in 1944. So you really want to watch out quoting Pat B.
