My highschool physics teacher had one of those IH "haybinder" or "corn binder" pickup trucks. Said he liked it because of all the brands out there at the time, theirs had the largest size U-joints.

Had an uncle that ran a couple of Scout 800's in the woods of NH for his logging business. They simply would not die either. The accelerator linkage would get mangled where it hung down through the floorboards requiring occasional straightening, but that was about it for trouble.

Doubt it.... the old 302's didn't come with coil packs and multiport fuel injection. We have one at work...

I have a '92 with multi-port but not coil packs. It is the same basic engine. Coil packs are easy to add.

OK - I had to look it up. The old 5.0L is dead - thankfully - what an awful engine.

The new Ford 5.0L is modified 4.6L called the 5.0L Coyote so it has the overhead cams, multiple valves per cylinder, etc. It is basically the Mustang GT engine detuned a little with a little more torque.

I guess I should have stated the model year of the truck I was referring to... it is a 2014 F150. I am not familiar with Ford gas motors, short of doing oil changes on these new trucks we have with the 5.0, and several 5.4's and 6.2's. Older 302's, 351's, not so much. Years ago I did swap out a 400M for a friend, but it was a pull it and put it back in deal.

But the new 5.0, to my untrained eye, is noticeably different.

You are making me miss my old 302 with a 4bbl carb on my 68 Mustang GT fastback.

Your actually saying that the 302's were a awful engine?? Wow I would say the 289/302 were some of the best Ford put out. About like the 283/302 GM engines. We have a few of the 5.0 Coyote based engines with 200k on the original plugs. CJ

I had one, my brother had one and both had a lot of trouble. I know quite a few guys who had trouble with them. Still there are some that really liked them. I have 4.6L Northstar engine that has been nothing but great (260k miles) but there are a lot of people who had trouble with them including two of my brothers as they are very well known for blowing head gaskets and eating oil. I guess it all depends on your experience. In my case the 5.0L in F150 was underpowered and a fuel hog that lost compression under 100k miles.

The late 60's Chevy 302 was also a great one IMO. Not sure when Ford started with the whole metric nomenclature and it that coincided with any quality change.

Most Fun: International Harvester Scout II, 1978; Wish I still had it... loved driving topless.

Best: Dodge 1996, 2500 pickup with a Cummins, 20 years old, 243,400 miles, just filled it up... I abuse that *****... but she still gets me around.

Worst: 2009 Tacoma, don't like anything thing about it. I'm sure it will last forever, since I don't like it.

Was that the HT4100. Most mechanics including myself said the HT stood for Hard Times!! CJ
