When did you tube start paying people? I thought it was just about someone having something interesting, they wanted to SHARE with the world. Making money at it, makes me question some of the content. I too could pretend to be an expert if it made me money. Some guy I watched alot, complained that Youtube had cut his revenue way back and he switched to Patreon (sp?).
I just appreciate to know what's what.
The revenue from the ads that run before and during YouTube videos is shared. YouTube keeps 45% of it, and the creator gets 55%. Seems like a fair deal to me since YouTube provides the platform, and manages the advertisers.
When we started, there were no lower limits to receiving ad revenue. That motivated me in a strange way. We used to get $0.05 or $0.18 per day. For some reason, I thought this was amazing, so I set a goal to get $1 per day, etc.
Nowadays, YouTube has an entry threshold of 1000 subscribers, and I believe 400,000 minutes of watch time in the last year. You don’t start earning revenue until you reach those milestones.
Really doesn’t affect your revenue much, as it takes lots of views / watchtime to amount to much. So, a creator might miss out on $100-$200 of total revenue due to the new rules.
Total watch time is important. It is used to determine which videos will be recommended by YouTube.
Having videos ‘suggested’ by YouTube is the magic which keeps creators going.
Unfortunately, the algorithm used to choose which videos get suggested is quite secretive, and changes frequently as YouTube tries to optimize the platform.
That is just scratching the surface, but hopefully that helps you to understand how this works.
