I suspect California has zeroed in on what happened.

The people who owned it before made a connection on the side with one male and one female remote coupler and that circled the fluid through the loader. I disconnected these from the loader when I removed it, however I did not immediately connect them back together completing the circle. I wonder if this had anything to do with it? Did it damage the pump by me not connecting them back up immediately. The tractor was running at the time as well, so I don't know if that had anything to do with pressure or not. When I disconnect the remotes now (as I did to evaluate things to the best of my ability) there was no apparent pressure on the output coupler because I could depress the inside nipple with no problem. This has stress me out somewhat because I priced the new hydraulic pumps and they are quite substantial in price, not to mention the tedious process of changing it out is somewhat daunting.

Hopefully you only sheared the key on the pump shaft. Although not shown on this drawing there is a key under the drive coupling. If you cannot see any external cracks in your pump then you will have to pull it and further investigate. These pumps have to have a place for the fluid to go. Never crank up without making sure that is so. HYDRAULIC_SYSTEM: Yanmar Tractor Parts

Thanks for your input. It is greatly appreciated.

I don't see any cracks on the outside of the pump at all. It looks like I will have to pull it to see if the key is sheared. Is it common for this to shear in situations I just described? If so, that is a great safety feature to protect the pump from damage.

Has happened many times. That is if your lucky. :)

They do have a key that can sheer.

But sounds like you dead headed the pump. Like Winston said, hopefully that a key was sheared at that was all. Cause pumps last forever usually and are expensive.

I really appreciate everyone's input. I am not an expert whatsoever on hydraulic systems. So basically, I remove the pump and see if the key was sheared. If it was, will it be just laying around inside the pump somewhere? Is the process just simply replacing the key and putting the pump back on?" When the pump is removed, how would I tell if the pump is bad? Sorry for all the questions, however I wish to proceed upon this venture with all the knowledge I can possess. Thank you!

I am far from an expert as well. But if everything is hooked up right and it does not work there is a good chance the pump key has sheared or blown up. A loose quote from Aaron at Hoye Tractor..."those things rarely" just go out. Now I don't want to totally speak for him bUT that was from some messages we sent back n forth like a decade ago when I had some hydro issues.

Half of the key would be in the pump shaft, the other half in the pump coupling. If the key is sheared it would be likely the pump would be ok. Replace the key, reinstall the pump.
