Zerks just pull out!!

Has this happened to anyone but me? When I pull the grease gun off the zerk of my chipper, the zerk pulls right out too and it is almost impossible to pull zerk off of grease gun coupler. Then the same thing happened on my boat trailer zerk! Two grease guns, both do same thing. Bought a different coupler at hardware store today that is adjustable, but everyone I talk to "has never heard of this happening". The zerks are just push in, not threaded.

Yup, tapered hole type fit. Afraid your going to see more of it too.

Then they haven't had much experience with grease guns and zerks. I think it fairly common with pressed in fittings, but seldom happened with screw in fittings on cars and trucks.

Are you aware that the amount of grip the grease fitting has on the zerk is adjustable?

Sometimes the factory setting is so tight, it you could tow the vehicle with it.

It doesn't seem adjustable, but the new one I got is. I will look at it better tomorrow.

I would suggest rethreading the hole, retapping and put in sae or metric screw in type zerks. While tapping, Be careful to avoid getting metal chips where they don't belong. That will stop that foolishness. Ken Sweet

Self-tapping zerks are available -- I ordered some through Fastenal. I haven't used them yet so I can't say how well they work.

The only ones I found after a search (admittedly brief) were 1/4-28". There may be others out there.

I'd swear I've about 30 different size zerks out of 20 on my ride. It seems almost every time I go to pull the hydraulic coupler off the zerk it is to tight, then the next one I go to put the coupler on it's way too loose. But in about 40 years of using grease guns on cars and motorcycles I rarely had to adjust the coupler.

Where would be a good source for high quality replacement zerks that would be a uniform size?

I have used the self tapping zerks and they seem to work quite well. I can't tell you where to get them, I got an assortment box full of them from Caterpillar. Although I have seen similiar assortment boxes at the local Napa. If you want an assortment that are pretty much a uniform size, that's the route I would go.

Just had two of them pull out of my deck wheels yesterday.
Didn't realize they made tapered zerks till I looked at them, thought at first they were stripped.
Guess it's time to look for some self taping zerks.
