Kubota BX2200 (2001, FEL, bar tires, wheel weights)

I purchased my BX late winter 2001. My reasons for choosing the BX over John Deere, New Holland, and Cub Cadet (the other brands I considered) were reputation, location (Messick's Farm Equipment is close to me), and model maturity in the marketplace. At the time, Kubota was one of only a handful of manufacturers offering a subcompact, and at the time, John Deere was just introducting the 4010 line. Detail: While I'm very pleased with my BX I have learned a lot as an owner. I use my tractor hard. The power these little machines have is incredible. It has been through many large snowstorms and handled anything less than 2' with ease. More than that and the lack of clearance makes it tough. As mentioned in my cons section, there are several, what I would call flaws, in the design. I don't know about them currently, but in 2001, Kubota used junk hoses. ALL of my hydraulic lines dry-rotted within 8 years. I replaced ALL of them with Parker and it is fine now. My other pet peeve is the hydrostatic pedal. It stuck from the factory, and it was a known issue that Kubota never addressed. When I bought my tractor, in comparison to other brands, it blew them all away. I have since been considering a new tractor and at this point I'm leaning toward John Deere. I like their overall design much better than Kubota's. They are roomier, and have some options on them that I find beneficial that Kubota's don't have as standard options. (Folding ROPS, Work lights, etc.) The transmission on the BX is outstanding, and was a large reason why I chose it initially. Heavier axle was a big deal to me. As hard as I used it, I'm glad I did because at the time, all the other brands had small, thin axles that worried me. The other manufacturers have since addressed this I believe and have a much more robust axle as well. Overall, I have no regrets in my purchase, and after 10 years of ownership, it still runs like a dream with regular maintenance. I have gotten water in the fuel a few times, and have since started to use additives. I still think the Kubota products are fine machines, although pricey to maintain.
Pros: Handles jobs much larger than advertised. Very powerful 22 horse diesel engine. Engine and drivetrain have proven to be reliable. Handled a 6' Bush Hog finisher relatively well. Easy to maintain. Easy access to all major components.
Cons: Hydraulic lines (all dry rotted in less than 8 years. Hydrostatic pedal stuck from factory, no fix. 3 point hitch is WAY undersized. Small cockpit for larger people. No Folding ROPS. No Work lights, and front lights are worthless with the FEL attached. Very light in the rear end, even with wheel weights. VERY expensive to replace parts.

Bought the tractor used at just under 200 hours. It has a 211 loader and rear scraper. I've put about 100 hours on it and the engine and driveline have run very well (mostly). I have a small property of 1 acre but it has been very useful and met most all my needs. I had a B7500 and it was a great tractor but I needed the maneuvering of the smaller tractor in tight spaces. On the good side....maneuverability and pretty much reliable. I really like what it can do for my needs. I have a few changes in terrain and the 4wd is an absolute must. Rarely can I get by without it. On the bad side, I am amazed at how often the hydraulic lines burst or fail. I've replaced at least 5 of them. Often at inopportune times. I can generally get them replaced within the hour at a local Napa auto parts store. But it's still a hassle. I also feel the loader hardware tends to require frequent checks for loose screws. The loader bushings had significant wear (upon purchase) which seems excessive for only 200 hours. One other problem was the previous owner ran biodiesel and it must have coagulated in the fuel system. I had to clean that out and new filters. Then I had a really rare problem when it wouldn't start. Long story short, I determined the biodiesel must have caused some sort of sticky gunk in the fuel injection system. The weather was cold (below 50F) so I took a hair dryer and warmed the injector. It started after 20 minutes of heating. I added some fuel system cleaner and haven't had a problem since. As per the manufacturer, do not use biodiesel. It might work under the right conditions and right type fuel, but for me it's not worth the potential problems. I also feel the engine cover vibrates excessively at lower rpms which is a little annoying at times. Another thing that I could use is an adjustable side angle (not up and down) on rear scraper. I have to adjust the angle manually, which is limited, but better than nothing, so it takes time to dial it in for a give situation. Also, the scraper tends to drag easily when it's on the tractor and while maneuvering over slight changes in incline. It can be a real problem, especially when backing. I don't know if there is a better tractor out there but when it's working, it works very well for my needs and I can't imagine wanting anything else. Just wish the hydraulic lines were more reliable. I think there are always trade-offs and no question it get's the job done.

This was the best investment I have ever made. I had some usual problems with mine as did all the early BX's, like the fuel tank sending unit, air cleaner clamp. power steering hoses, but they were minor issues.I also must tell you that the first winter I had some starting issues and it was found to have never seated the rings properly.I think I was partly to blame because I used synthetic oil to soon. Kubota took care of it and I have used Cen Pe Co Oil ever since. I use my tractor hard 12 months out of the year and it has done everything I ever asked of it. I would like to soon buy a new BX2360 and I have a lot of people who want mine when I'm ready to sell. I would Highly Recommend this tractor or any Kubota Product.

The amazing BX2200

I bought this used with less than 50 hours on it. It has been an amazing tool around the yard. Absolutely a time saver for normal chores like moving mulch and general yard cleanup. Much easier and faster than the wheelbarrow and tarp methods. We live on a 3/4 mile gravel road that the county only rarely maintains, so I have been the road maintainer the past few years and am still amazed at the work this little beast can do. Its an excellent mower, fairly decent gravel mover and good snow plower. I recently was able to use the snowblower I purchased with it in over 2 ft of snow and other than the lack of traction in a couple of steep grades worked extremely well. Really needs chains with a blower in deep snow but will get by without them. I use it about 3-4 days a week year round for various things, from unloading equipment from the truck, moving bagged mulch and fertilizer, hauling 2x4's and plywood, road grading, etc. I have found it to be indispensable around the farm. Maintenance has been minimal. A couple of flasher relays, a fuel tank gasket, a couple of bent check chains, and the normal oil, and filters. Loader is quick and easy to remove. If I had a choice I would wish for more lift capacity for the loader and a little more lift height. I have had other tractors but this is the best compromise with low CG, good power, usable loader, 3-ph, and super fuel economy.
Pros: Powerful, versatile and agile little tractor. Handles small jobs with ease. 3-PH handles most normal implements well,
Cons: Could use a little more capacity in the FEL though it can be tippy with loaded FEL. 3-PH hookup can be frustrating with low lift arms and fussy turnbuckle check chains.

I couldn't be more pleased with the capabilities of this tractor for the needs of a home owner with an acre of land in a snow region. It has done everything I have reasonably asked it to and been completely reliable. I did have to install a block heater after my purchase to get it to start on sub zero mornings and I added a large capacity alternator to handle auxiliary lighting. Those are the reason I didn't give it a full 5 stars.
Pros: 4 wheel drive just doesn't get stuck even in 2 feet of snow
Cons: mowing deck is tricky to install for an old fat guy like me

The BX2200 is a great little tractor. I had mine for 7 1/2 yrs. with no trouble from it. Always started right up, only ran off road diesel in it. I just traded it for a 2010 BX2360 hope this tractor is as good as the BX2200. Would recommend the 2200 to anyone.

Rode Hard and Put Up Dirty

We own about 46 acres with aprox. half mowable greenery of one type or another. Mow around a lot of trees (my dad never cut down a dogwood so the pastures are littered with them) and about half wooded with trails,streams,steep hills, etc. BX has mowed this mostly by itself since summer of 2001 with some help from the L3300 and its finish mower or bushhog if someone else had time to help. In the beginning the Bx2200 and RCK60 spent many hours in the shop for sorry hydraulic hoses, mower blades that were irregular in center hole location, mower wheel mounts breaking off deck, and front steering hydraulic cylinder mounts vibrating loose resulting in bent mounts. But considering all the rough terrain and long hours this machine has held its own, it was not overly pampered just serviced regular because I know you get out what you put into something. I am in the process of trading it on a new B3200, we will see if the B can hold up as well.
Pros: Strong engine and transmission, R4 tires pulled through any conditions, took whatever you threw at it.
Cons: Besides those issues mentioned above, sorry seats (at least three now) with little suspension, difficult to keep radiator clean of fine debris, sorry work lights, more recently difficulty keeping roll pins in the front wheel drive shaft (they keep breaking), needs another seat.

My experience with a Kubota Bx2200

I need a lawn mower but wanted more than just a mower. I use it to push snow for me and my neighbors I wanted 4 wheel drive and had tractor tires put on it. I use it for mowing and pulling things such as fallen tree and dirt and gravel. I had to replace power-steering cylinder on it and alternator and battery the past 3 years. I mow about 3 acres a week with it. I am now having problems with the hydrostatic drive I need to adjust it and not sure how. I had a mechanic tell me and it did not do the job.
Pros: Love the Tractor would buy another in a heartbeat.
Cons: not enough close dealers in the area About 50 miles away

I just wanted to put this on here for anyone looking to buy a bx this is the best compact tractor i have ever owned and the only problems i have had have been very minor. Their dealers are very cooperative and i would never buy another john deere.
