Bought cheap---$1,300. Starts nicely. Gear range is useable, traction not good when muddy. Engage diff lock helps but then steering suffers. Brush hogs okay. Not the best firewood puller. Have an old post hole auger I'm trying to retrofit to it. Very simple tractor.

Pros: Simple to check over. Fit a 1 wire Chevy alternator easily. Short and stout. Great fuel economy.
Cons: Bad brakes, no power steering, not much traction, PTO doesn't work when clutch pushed in.

250AS Belarus
Belarus AS250 Review
Model Year: 1989

I bought this tractor new in 1989, and it only has 300+ hours on it. It looks rough due to never being stored inside, so there's massive surface rust everywhere. Many of the hours is sitting at 3/4 throttle with a 3-point hitch wood splitter hooked to the hydraulics. The tractor was not built for comfort, speed or looks. It was built to pull equipment, and it has done everything a 31 hp diesel is expected to do. I bush hog, plow, disc, run a post hole auger, scrape, rotary tiller, etc., and it has never failed any of the tasks. The fuel pump went out a few years ago, and rather than spend the bucks on a new one, I installed a $30 electric one which feeds the injector box just fine. The alternator finally completely died a few months ago, and I replaced it with a Delco 1-wire. A little bracket modification was all that was necessary. The had the original starter rebuilt some years back, and it just failed again. I bought a new gear drive one to replace the factory direct drive one. All the reviews say I'll like that starter much better. It's a bear to drive due to no power steering and the added weight on the front tires. Should have never been made without power steering, but I did have a $700 choice to buy this option new. These tractors are work horses, but seem to hold little resale value. I've heard from dealers who sell other brands that the transmission is weak, but I haven't seen it. I've destroyed a bush hog drive shaft, twisted a pinion shaft off a auger, and disintegrated a ratche slip clutch on the PTO, but no transmission issues.

Pros: Strong, locking differential, good fuel economy.
Cons: Poor wiring, expensive parts, have to have front suitcase weights to install heavy equipment. Original third arn bracket was weks. I had to remake it within the first two years due to it breaking in two pieces.

I bought from a previous owner who didn't like because he couldn't understand the shifting pattern. This tractor has manual steering but I would have preferred power. The reason I bought it was because of the loader and the tractor was in great shape for the money.

Pros: Good size tractor and the loader.
Cons: Standard steering.

250 As My First 3 pt Hitch

Solid tractor, good steel, easy fluids, ease of shifting, soft footprint, fuel lasts long time, nice to have now that the bugs are worked out. Only $1400, after some oil in tranny. Solved the locking up problem. She's working okay. Can't seem to adjust brakes enough to function without also dragging considerably. That's now all that bugs me.

Pros: Oops, great on fuel solid for size, forward reverse lever, posi lock.
Cons: Hard steering, tricky climb up, should check fluids often, needs good battery.

This has to be the worst tractor ever built. Way too heavy, electrical and fuel problems, turns hard, no breaks, complicated, too many levers, hydraulic problems. Driving it is a real nightmare. On the plus side it has a lot of soul. When you do finally get it running and moving, it does a good job of moving forward, as long as there is not too much weight. I don't recommend anyone buy one unless they have plenty of time on their hands and like to meet a challenge head on. It is more like staying on a bucking bronco for 60 seconds. You end up with a sore ***, hurt bones, but your proud of your self for lasting as long as you did.

Pros: None.
Cons: See above.

I owned this little Commie tractor for about 12 years and it was a great little tractor. Yeah, the jokes about the commie thing get old,, but for $1800 it was a great deal. The little tractor was built like a tank, and with everything pretty much on the outside, it was easy to work on. Also mine had the down-force hydraulics on the 3-point, which is great when using a post hole digger. Mine had the shuttle shift, and it was a real pain in the butt if you needed a gear in a hurry, forget it. But I abused the heck out of this tractor, and never had a bit of trouble with it. The only reason I sold it was to get more horsepower.

Pros: Cheap to buy, easy to work on and adjust things, down force on the 3-point
Cons: Sits up to high, steering was too high, not much traction, spun tires too easily.

I have abused my Belarus for 20 years. It does everything I need for it to and requires minimal maintenance. The castings tend to be soft, and the electrical system is not very good, but it is a heavy tractor that is a good value, considering its low cost. I would buy another.

Pros: Cost, down pressure on hydraulics, the importer is GREAT for parts availability and VERY responsive, easy on fuel, the shuttle shift is nice once you are used to it, sitting way high in the air has advantages, did I mention the $$$ ;-)
Cons: Castings are soft, electrical sux, fit and finish are rough and rugged, dealer system is non-existant, controls are not conventional, sitting way high in the air makes it feel tippy, brakes are weak, this is not a tractor for someone who doesn't like to tinker or is fussy about details....oh, and then there is the whole soviet bloc/commie joke thing you gotta learn to deal with.....but don't let me talk you out of getting one!
