Case 580 Super L Type I
Model Year: 1998

First backhoe or any heavy equipment for that matter. So far, runs very good. Easy to maintain. Seems to be built very tough. Interior very comfortable, still in good shape. Controls located well and easy to operate. Thumb and extend-a-hoe very handy features. Visibility good. Case dealers very helpful.

Pros: 4WD, plenty of power, thumb, extend-a-hoe.
Cons: Price.

Case 580 CK (actually)

Solid engine, still not using oil. Transmission and/or clutch are starting to ail, and had my first big bill last week-- starter threw a bushing (in pieces) into the oil sump and it was sucked into the oil pump. It's hard to say when to stop spending money on an old tractor when it's what you've got. Still getting a lot of work out of her, though. We'll put up with each other for a while longer.

Pros: diesel engine that just won't quit
Cons: she's getting old

CASE 580 G

This is French made Case.

Pros: Very nice machine for the money.
Cons: Hard to identify correct parts.

580 Case
Model Year: 1970

Mine is an old gas engine 580 construction king case tractor with 6' wide front-end loader bucket and back-hoe attachment with two different size bucket for the back-hoe we use the smaller of the two for every thing we do runs great smokes some due to oil burning now but can't beat it lift anything just about.

Pros: Hardly ever have to fix.
Cons: Engine is getting harder to find parts for.

My Toy

I bought the machine for my own use. I have done some work on it with my brother. Packed some of the cylinders, cleaned and painted it, cut off the cutting edge and welded on a new one, reinforced the back of the bucket with 1/2 inch X 3 inch steel, bought a 24 inch and 12 inch bucket to go with the 18inch that came with the machine. In clearing snow it wanted to slip so we installed chains on the rear wheels with washers on back side of the rims to keep from chains from rubbing on frame, also needed longer lug bolts. It does have a cab and heater which is nice in winter here in western Maryland in the mountains. A good machine.

Pros: Good machine.
Cons: None.

1970 Case 580 Restoration

Bought this on eBay; not sorry. It needed a lot of work and still needs some but the seller was upfront about it's problems. I've rebuilt 8 of the 12 hydraulic cylinders. I've had to collect a bunch of new tools, learned a lot, and have gotten a lot of help from "this forum"; thanks guys. The main things remaining are 1) brakes 2) more painting, 3) a tire, and 4) electrical. The starter works and the manifold heater now works but the rest of the electrical is still on the list. Being a recently retired NASA engineer, I'm at home with anything electrical or electronic. I've read that the brakes are likely full of tranny fluid. It might be spring before I did into that.

Pros: Lots of power.
Cons: Needs lots of TLC, as well as a few grunches.

580SE Review

I bought this machine from a scrap yard four years ago it needed an engine and some other stuff. I restored it and has been using it to sell aggregates ever sInce I also used it to do a bit of land glarIng and to spread marl. This machine has been very good to me. For people who intend to buy a 580c -k go ahead.

Pros: Simple and straight forward machine.
Cons: You have to pay attention to the power train.

580c Maintenance
Model Year: 1977

Good machine, not wanting to work it too hard before I change all oil and know the clutch/drive is up to the challenge. May be some water in the shuttle oil. spitting some hydraulic, but the lack of brakes is a liability. Fun? You bet.

Pros: Got one, getting some work done after 20 years on property.
Cons: No history, want to ensure it's maintained.

Case 580E Construction King

Loader with Gannon box, great pulling and dressing power so long as the power shuttle is working properly. Suffered several set backs while working on power shuttle, but once repaired the tractor was back at 100% capability. Can only say that while I considered selling the tractor during the troubled times with shuttle problems, I wouldn't consider letting it go now. Anyone considering purchasing a similar unit should make sure that they work it until it gets good and hot before they make the purchase. The power shuttle seems to fail at higher temperatures if it is weak. If the seller or dealer is unwilling to allow you to work the tractor, under load, for upwards of an hour before purchase, don't buy it. There is a good chance that the unit you are looking at has a similar problem to mine and will fail on you in the middle of a job.

Pros: Good power and great capability for its size.
Cons: Power shuttle can be troublesome unless built correctly.
