Used and Abused

I bought this backhoe for $2000.00. It ran, but that was about all. This is not going to be restored, it will be used! First fixed the brakes (were rusted), 2 new batteries. all new coolant hoses, replaced t-stat and gasket, rewired glow plugs, changed transmission/hydro oil, oil, filter, and fuel filters, drained oil from backhoe front bucket. They want a review; I would say if they make the new ones last like this old girl that now runs and digs like a new one they would be putting themselves out of selling new ones. The color maybe rust but she will work right beside the red-green-orange-and yellow.

Pros: Runs strong. Made of steel.
Cons: Finding anybody that knows about this thing.

A Good Old Workhorse

The 460 Utility is just that - a utility tractor which is made to last. The only negative aspect of this tractor is the power steering system. The former owner sold it mainly because the steering was not working. I quickly found out that parts are not readily available and not cheap if the tractor is more than 20 or 30 years old. The interesting part is that if I had bought the tractor six months earlier than I did the part I needed (power steering piston rack) would have only cost $60. As it was, International raised the price (obsolete/vintage pricing) from $60 to $500 just before I bought the tractor. Live and learn. I was able to get a part made at a local machine shop for $75 which lasted for over 20 years (just broke again this past summer). A Wagner I-260 loader is mounted on this tractor which has no problem carrying the weight.

Pros: Heavy. Solid. Built in the USA. Built to last.
Cons: Fuel economy (burns gas), power steering, parts are expensive.

It was built in 1960, has a Wain-roy back hoe and an international 3000 loader, So far I have rebuilt the power steering box including welding grinding gear teeth and machining new parts (none available) replaced 'o' rings on rear axles, made new pins for the fast reverse shifter, unwelded and repositioned the steering arms on the front spindles. Painted it bright tractor supply yellow. I am in the process of removing the backhoe valve body to rebuild that (boom won't stay up) cleaned the (main) filter changed the hydraulic oil still have to change the filter on the loader seems to be lacking hydraulic power so after the valve and filter I can only hope I don't have to go after the pump. On the other it's a gas engine and runs really well.

Pros: $1800
Cons: Needs lots of little things?

OOLD used tractor

Bought it cheep, the ratings system need s a "0"stars "have no experience" category. That being said I bought it with steering issues which led me to rebuilding the steering box,parts no longer available so welding up missing/worn gear teeth and re machining, machining a new rack for the power steering cylinder to operate,bushings seals ,etc. Replacing pins in the fast reverser shifting fork,"o"rings in the rear axles, got the rust/water out of the gas replaced the sediment bowl(dropped a wrench on it) un welded the front spindle arms and relocated them,now on to the backhoe valves (boom drops) and should be good to go.

Pros: Runs great.
Cons: Very few parts /manuals available.
