Old Reliable
Model Year: 1982

Yanmar knows how to build 'em. We bought this tractor when my son was two. He is now 33. The poor old thing has been used and neglected sometimes, but always does the job you ask of it. No frills, hard to get on and off of with the loader, turns well without the loader but hard to turn with it. The alternator is showing signs of giving out. All we have done to it in 30+ years of sometimes abusive use is change the fluids and filters sometimes and put a steering rod on it. That's all. She needs a new seat and needs the rust fixed where dad always let his knee rub on the fender before he passed on. Tractee is what my son called it. There never was a tractor to him and he would correct you if you said otherwise. The little machine is a part of our family just like the JD 820 diesel we bought new in 1972 that dad used and abused for 33 years.

Pros: Just handy and reliable
Cons: Not many features. As basic as it gets

Outlasting the Uncles...

Father and uncles retired to 6 acres on inter-coastal waterway and the "rich uncle" bought the 750. Initially used to grade the road and pull a grooming motor, now just grooming mower. Two of the uncles have passed on, one 95, but the tractor is still hanging on. I have been here last couple of years and taking over the upkeep and other than being temperamental in starting, it runs great. I realize it doesn't have all that many hours on it, but good to see there wasn't any planned obsolescence on this puppy.

Pros: Gets the job done and has been extremely reliable.
Cons: Proven to be tough to start, JD are proud of their parts and prices.

Great First Tractor

When I was much younger, I bought this "huge" estate in Los Angeles. It was horse legal property within the city limits! Dam near a full acre! So, naturally, it mandated that I buy a tractor to validate my status as a farmer. I never had any animals, but would do a veg garden the size of a tennis court every yr. It's a 4WD, ag tires, and it came with a #67 FEL, Gearmore 54" roto tiller, Danhauser PH digger w/6" & 12", a Gannon roll over box blade, and I have since added a boom and a bedder-hiller. I think I'm on my third battery. Everything is orig except I did replace my front tires last yr. Upholstery needs to be redone, but still comfortable. The plastic 3-pt hitch (up-dn) broke but I just made a larger one out of wood and painted it yellow. Perfect. I've done regular oil changes but that's it. It's been a great farm hand. 18 mos ago, I retired to a "massive" 10 acre place in TN (half woods) and thought I might have something bigger/stronger. So, last Sat, I went to the Kubota store and got a 4WD L4600 shuttle, FEL, but no other implements. Will fetch it end of week.

Pros: Ultra dependable; quite strong; simple to operate, good "MPG",
Cons: Narrow stance, high CG, harder to start when under 20 degrees.

First Tractor

I was looking for a tractor to help with snow removal and grading. I came across this JD750 at an auction, I was initially aiming for a Ford 9N, one was actually sitting right next to the JD at the lot. I didn't like the 9N much so I waited to see what people would pay for the JD, not even thinking I would buy. To my surprise, the JD went for a very low price, so I ended up buying it. It was well maintained, but had a few electrical issues, bumps and scrapes, nothing major really. I managed to fix everything up with minimal investment. A few weeks after I started using it the clutch fell apart, so a bit more work to get that fixed but it's been great since. I didn't ask much of this tractor yet, but so far it has delivered flawlessly and I'm very happy with it. This will be its first winter with me, so I'm looking forward to finding out how difficult it will be to start. The only downside so far, attachments for this size tractor are hard to find in my community, so I may have to buy new, but this one is a keeper, so it won't matter much in the long run. Parts are cheap unless you want them from your local JD Dealer. Very little maintenance is required, and this model has 4WD, which I hear will be great once I get an FEL for it. Operation is fairly easy, the clutch when adjusted properly works very well although even with 20 hp if not gently it will jerk real hard. A few times I accidentally stepped on the throttle pedal not realizing it since the thing is so small, but it is handy. The wide range of speeds to choose from is great for any job. You have a high and low range, and four gears to go with each. Top speed is about 20kmph. The brakes work very well and are super easy to adjust, all mechanical, so you just need a wrench or two. The instrument cluster lacked a real temp gauge and volt meter, but this was easily fixed with a $30 kit from Canadian Tire and an hour to install the two. The volt meter helps when you have a dying battery, which I didn't replace yet since it still starts with no issues. The seat is adjustable so this thing will fit just about any sized operator. ROPS came standard, and a seat belt too, so you should feel safe once you get used to it. Pulling power is more than what an average home owner will ever need. I pulled out entire trees from the forest without any trouble, something my ATV could not do. The tires have plenty of grip and with 4WD, I was able to pull old logs from the bottom of my river with ease. Fuel consumption is very moderate, and since it's a diesel, you can let it sit for quite a while, unlike gasoline which will clog everything up if you use the cheap methanol "enriched" stuff. Since it was built in 1985, it could use a new paint job, but it's not really a show model, very little rust on it, and most of the components are still factory painted with JD green. The radiator need to be flushed, and some of the smaller tubing was clogged up, but everything still works just as it should. Overall, for a first tractor, I'm very happy with this machine.

Pros: Cheap, reliable, easy to use, good quality, easy to fix.
Cons: Attachments hard to find.

Workhorse

I've had this tractor going on 15 years and it is a true work horse. Except for operator space I have nothing to say, but good things about this unit. I have many attachments.

Pros: Easy on gas, 4 wheel drive, power assist, always starts!
Cons: It would be nice to have a little more legroom.

JD750
Model Year: 1989

Well built. Starts every time. 4x4 is great but I need ag tires & rims for sure. The turfs just don't get you anywhere on the field but good on the lawn. Put a 67 FE loader on it. I like it for a utility tractor. Well worth the money you can find them for.

Pros: 4 wheel drive, fuel sipper.
Cons: Would be better with a live PTO.

Good Tractor

This tractor has been very reliable so far. It has been used for cultivating. I am very pleased with it and plan to buy more implements.

Pros: Easy to start, fuel efficient.
Cons: Too light on front end. Have to add weights.

Good Size for Gentleman Farmer (or me)

Had a stroke in 2000 and traded my IH for the JD 750. It was smaller and easier to get on as I have a bad leg. Dealer talked me into a front end snow blower and I thank him for it every winter---we get upwards pf 3ft. of snow on average. Main use these days is snow removal, brush cutting, hay fields perimeters,and general landscaping chores. Works like a charm. Even when we hit -30 C. it starts up with only a little coaxing. I find that I am having a bit more difficulty getting on and off in the winter with snow boots and winter clothes. Leg is getting a bit more difficult and I now wish I had picked up a newer hydro-static model, but it is what it is and I am happy with the machine. Overall it is a good machine and I am happy with it. If only I could swap out the tyranny for a hydro-static etc.

Pros: Good power, fantastic front end snow blower, 4 wheel drive and a bucket means never having to say "**** I'm stuck".
Cons: Any problems are mine not the machine.

Simple but Reliable, Quality Built

I bought new in 1987 and have used it since then, I think I will probably own and use it until I die. It has been incredibly reliable and of extremely high quality. My only problems have been a few times the electrical contacts in the starting system have been a problem and I find that I should keep it in the garage or cover it with a tarp. Other than that I have replaced the tires once, the battery once, and I have lost the 4 wheel drive after a neighbor borrowed it and abused it getting a pickup truck out of a ditch. I have the front-mounted snow blower and have used that for 26 years---no repairs except replaced the impeller once. The #67 loader is maybe a little heavy for the turf tires and it is hard to steer with the weight of the loader. It is a comparative dream if the loader is off, then steering is light and easy.

Pros: Quality.
Cons: None.

JOHN DEERE 750

John Deere 750 bought from dealer that had took it in on trade, it had a bad blow by, the people had told dealer they had rebuilt the engine. Well they had been in it number 1 cyl had cracked ring and starting to burn piston , number 3 cyl was installed backward, all ring gaps were lined up, just now getting to trying to re-start, got my parts from HoyeTractor.com , they work well with you.

Pros: Easy to work on.
Cons: Small parts.

1985 John Deere

I bought this machine with the MMM only and purchased a 5 foot back blade to use for snow pushing and leveling dirt and stone. I've used it for the leveling and stone work mowing the yard and 2.5 acres in the back field I am currently looking for a bush hog 4-5 ft. as well as a FEL, if I can find one, and a front mount snowblower. I have also recently purchased a extra MMM that is absolutely like brand new with "ALL" mounting hardware as well as front PTO setup.

Pros: Run great, good traction with the mfwd.
Cons: No rear hyd. ports, can't buy attachments from mfg.

Pat's John Deere

WE bought it to clear a lot we purchased and it did a great job. The following year our barn(26x30 post and beam) went down from snow we use it to clear out the foundation and set up the new one. It has bucket and a backhoe. We still us it constantly after 12 years.

Pros: Small enough to work around the yard.
Cons: Sometimes it could be bigger, not very often.

Great Tractor

I am original owner of this tractor. I bought it new in 1981, and the only thing I have had to replace is the electronic module. I use it with a 60 inch finishing mower for the majority of use, but I do have a 60 tiller, box blade and bush hog that I use on occasion. This is a solid built machine that if I had it to do over again, I would do it, only this time I would get the loader attachment and four wheel drive option.

Pros: Everything about it.
Cons: None, and I have the years experience with it to prove it.

My 750

My wife and I bought a piece of land next to ours and it needed to be cleared so we bought this tractor, front end loader with a backhoe. It did a great job we also use it when our barn went down when snow collapsed the roof. We used the tractor to clear and move the field stone foundation.The tractor has been around about 12 years now and still gets plenty of use and the piece of land we cleared is now producing apples and plums.

Pros: John Deere.

John Deere 750 with Loader

I bought my 750 Deere with front loader used with a broken hour meter about ten years ago. It has so far, been one of the best investments I have made in my life. I use it everyday, and it so far, has broken the bolt for the power steering mounting bracket a couple of times, blown one loader hose, had one bearing in the front end go bad, and the hydraulic fluid froze one winter. I have had to replace the front tires and change the fluids every year or so, but it doesn't even get as much preventative maintenance as it should. It still has the same battery I installed in it right after I bought it. A fantastic machine.

Pros: Dependable, lots of power.
Cons: A little hard to get on and off.

Love my little tractor

Bought this tractor almost a year ago and it's my baby. Came with front loader, brush hog, and a 550 tiller. Traded the tiller and a little to boot for a Woods BX70 backhoe works and runs great.

Pros: Runs great, has power steering, like the looks
Cons: Little hard to get off of tractor.

Looking back at 22 years of reliability

I bought a JD 750 new in April of 1988. It came with MFWD, a 375 front blade, a Howard tiller and a Woods rotary mower. In 22 years and 2600+ hours, it has been the most useful, absolutely dead reliable, rugged piece of equipment I've ever owned. Perhaps a little crude by today's standards, with no PS, a non-synchro GST, and no live PTO, but I have no regrets whatsoever. The tractor has been used hard for most of that time. For several years I made my living with it, running a 5' rotary mower, a Woods 650 backhoe and a Howard tiller. In all that time, the only non-consumable parts I've had to replace (that weren't a direct result of operator stupidity) are the voltage regulator (Spring 2010) and seals on the rockshaft arms. That's it. Tires, a battery, and filters and oil. Period. It's still running strong, starts easily, sips fuel and does an amazing amount of work for such a small, light tractor.

Pros: Economy & reliability.
Cons: No PS; No live PTO.

JD 750

I find the sitting area too small and congested for my 6 foot body. The control levers and shifter don't allow for easy mounting / dismounting. The brake is too close to the throttle, and the machine feels unstable on the slightest inclines. Power steering should be standard not optional.

Pros: Easy to get parts.
Cons: Poor operator design.

Love the tractor good strong tractor for it's size. If it's lacking something it would be power steering. It's not bad when an oversized backhoe is attached but bucket full of wet clay you need to look like the Hulk to turn it.
