2009 Massey 2625
Model Year: 2009
I'll begin by admitting the 2625 is not as polished as similarly equipped tractors. It's a bit old school, partially straddle the trans, gas tank above the engine, mechanical everything except the IPTO. However, and there are very few MFWD 50+ pto hp tractors with a synchronized shuttle transmission for even close to the same price. Not that I wouldn't love to own either a NH WM-65 or Deere 5065M, but I just couldn't justify the extra 10,000. I have a very competent and close Massey dealer who gave me a heck of a deal and had the 0% for 72 month financing, so the 2625 came home. I've lived with this tractor for a little more than two years at the time of this review and have been very happy so far. The only issue I had was the engine balancer was recalled. The local dealer came out, picked it up and repaired at no cost, which was the only reason I rated build quality and reliability at 4 and not 5 (may be a little unfair). I've made hay, brush hogged, moved tons of dirt, gravel, brush and bales. The 8x8 Shuttle has been flawless. Hydraulics and power have been phenomenal. The 2625 has a low center of gravity which has worked very well on some of my steeper ditch banks. With ballast in the tires and the loader, it scales at just over 8000#, which is pretty good for it's relatively small size. I have read that others have had every problem imaginable for an internal combustion wheeled off-highway vehicle; Everything from weak breaks, hydraulic failures, drive shaft problems, etc. I can say that with over 350 hours in the seat, I have seen none of these problems. In the interest of fairness, I've found a couple things that are not so great. The 2625 is a hard starter when it's very cold, especially if you let it sit for a while. Not that it will not start right up when it cranks, it just seems like the battery does not have enough charge to crank fast. Keeping it on a trickle charger and/or using the block heater seams to solve this. The second issue is this tractor is loud. Not much you can do about this as it is a non turbo and not a good idea to convert to horizontal if used for haying as I do. Last, the 2625 has it's tank in the center of the hood above the engine. That's great for keeping diesel warm in the winter, but not so great to fill when the loader is attached. Even with it's few quirks, overall a solid tractor and good performer. I believe you will not find a better value in it's class.
Pros: Excellent performance for price, excellent fuel economy.
Cons: Hard starting in the cold, poor fuel tank placement, loud.
