L2048 Scotts
Old But Still Going, Sort Of
Model Year: 2002

I bought this litle tractor new from Home Depot in Racine WI. At the time I had a 1/2 acre and most was grass. I used it for mowing, pulling a yard trailer and plowing snow inthe winter. it worked great for teh first 5 years. This is when it started to have issues. The snow blade was weak and kept bending the center mountin arm. I have to hammer it back into shape each year. The transmission is on its way out and is hard to move in reverse. I am told that I am lucky it has lasted this long. Now I live on 7 acres with field grass that I would like to mow but driving this in the field beats me up and the poor thing is just not up to it. I figure I got a fair amount of value for the $2000 I paid for it but I was expecting a bit more being a John Deere product. The hour meter went out at 150 hours so I do not know how many hours are on it now

Pros: Light weight, good traction in snow with chains, easy to work on
Cons: Poor and weak transmission

Model Year: 2002

I purchased this tractor used from a friend years ago. It has been reliable until it reached 360 hours. The Briggs and Stratton engine blew an oil sump gasket. Lucky for me it was a relatively slow leak so I did not run the sump dry. Then at 375 hours the transmission started to fail. The unit must be replaced. Technically, it cannot be rebuilt. The deck spindles are not very reliable. The spindle bearings fail after a season or two even with spindles with grease fittings. The top bearing does get enough grease. Bearings on the electric clutch are also a weak point. I was able to remove the clutch bearing seal and repack and I do so each spring.

Pros: Easy to repair.
Cons: Have to repair too often. Engine and transmission reliability.
