Howdy TBN'ers,

I have just placed an order with Markham Welding for the narrowest of their heavy-duty grapples, which they call an "Extreme Gator Mini Rake." It is only 36" wide, but is fab'd from 1/2" steel, and has a single jaw with what looks like a well-protected cylinder.

My Gator Rake grapple will be used on a Kubota L-39, and will be the first attachment I have that uses the aux. hydraulics on the front (already set-up by the dealer at time of purchase last year, in anticipation of this and also a hydraulic auger once the bank account recovers...).

My decision to go with a grapple this small was strongly influenced by the excellent posts here at TBN by Islandtractor. His argument in favor of going with the smallest grapple possible in order to maintain lifting capacity made sense to me, as moving boulders around is on my project list. Melissa at Markham made the same point, saying that the Gator will still be able to grab more than my L-39 arms can lift (rated at 2200 lbs. by Kubota). I believe that the Gator weighs-in at around 450 lbs, so even boulders close to a ton will soon not be safe from alien-abduction!

The only disadvantage I anticipate of the Gator Rake compared to a 60" grapple by Markham or WR Long (I looked at these two companies based on good reviews here at TBN and also a loyalty to buying local when possible), is that loads will need to be centered more carefully than a larger grapple will require. I do not anticipate hating this overmuch...

Of all the TBN posts I read while making this decision, I saw none where a tractor as large as an L-39 is mated to a grapple as small as this Gator Rake, so I guess I'm a guinea pig of sorts. The grapple is due to arrive Thursday, and I hope to post a picture or two by next week. In the meanwhile, I welcome comments, opinions, and further thoughts on grapple brands, sizing, etc.

We're waiting for photos of that Gator Rake. Sounds like an interesting tool especially if you are focused on moving rocks. I'd imagine it will do just fine with brush/logs as well. If you think about it, 36" with a grapple on a FEL is about the same as the big excavators with a hydraulic thumb with regard to the ability to pick something up securely. Those excavators don't seem to have any trouble with stumps, rocks, logs, bushes etc.

I am moving my own 48" Millonzi grapple to a much larger tractor very soon so will have the grapple on a 41hp tractor with an FEL that lifts about what yours does. I don't have any concerns though mine is of 3/8 mild steel instead of the 1/2 inch you have. Yours is much heavier too indicating very strong construction. The only thing I would look out for with these relatively narrow grapples is to make sure the load is secure and doesn't try to torque the grapple by being loose and shifting. The other thing to watch out for is that you don't snag the end of a load of logs or tree against something like a tree while you are driving with the load. The grapples are designed to handle up and down and front/back forces not twisting forces. The narrower the grapple the more likely you could have the load twisting if it is not securely clamped.

Thanks IT... glad you showed up so quickly!

I appreciate the advice about avoiding lateral torque on the grapple. I'll start out slowly, and take small bites...

Congrats on your own tractor upgrade! I'm sure that you will love every additional hp you're getting!

Actually while I'm looking forward to the new tractor I am a bit sheepish about the whole thing as I am a strong believer in having just enough horsepower and not too much. I did quite a lot with my 21hp machine so we'll see if I can be proportionately more productive with the bigger one. What I am really looking forward to is the 2700lbs of lift and 3700lbs of breakout force with the new loader. That plus the grapple I hope will be a real brush murdering combo.

I'm looking at ordering the same grapple. How did it work out for you?
