Got Ambushed Last Night and Shot!

Although a very unfortunate and sad event, she broke one of the prime rules.
Didn't identify the target.
How can you make an assessment of the force you need to use in the first place ... or if it even needs any as in this case?
IMHO, anyone who shoots in the dark after merely "hearing something" without identifying is irresponsible. She very well could have flipped the lights on first or used a flashlight and still be ready to shoot if that was required. Same with hunters who shoot at movement or through brush without identifying the target first.
That is one of my biggest fears.

Sorry, I typed my post before I read yours. Needless to say I agree with you 100 per cent

No need to be sorry, I agree with you 100% too. You put it better than I did.
And like you, I can't tell you how many times I have gone with gun and flashlight in hand to check out strange noises or other situations. I have not shot anyone yet either, but scared away a couple people for sure. But almost every time I have caught them off guard so I had time to identify and react accordingly. Believe me, I'm in CA and the last thing I want to do is spend the rest of my life in jail or getting sued by some creep who broke into my home because I didn't allow him to rob, molest or attempt to murder me.

I'm interested in a biometric gun safe for quick access.

what happens when the battery goes dead?
what happens when the screen that reads your fingerprint dies?
what happens when the theif bashes the screen to read a fingerprint?
how long does it take to unlock from the time you put your thumb on it to the time you can put the gun in your hand?

Battery life is measured in years and you replace the battery annually.

You sue the **** out of the manufacturer. (actually, fingerprint readers are pretty much inert objects & last forever...)

You already have your weapon in hand and you shoot the thief.

About 3 seconds. Quicker if you've practiced. Longer if you're a clutz.

Yep, it's much faster than any other kind of lock.

And I own guns for FUN, because I enjoy shooting. The protection aspect is just so much icing on the cake.

I believe there is a key that will open the biometric safes manually.

I own firearms because historically, the 20th century being a case in point, governments murder their own citizens in the millions.

Everything else is icing.

Just one thing i want to say: I dont know the origin of this story, if its from the USA or Holland:

The story goes that a granny heard something at night in the living room. went there, took a shot, and flipped the lights on afterwards, to discover she just shot her granddaughter, who was there for the weekend....

Maybe the people that wear guns to feel safe, arent really the ones that should have them, as fear is a very bad advisor....

I would love to visit Holland. The people I met from Holland seemed very friendly.
But here in the good ol' USA we have our share of criminals, and even worse, our share of those who are more concerned with the criminals' rights than the victims rights. I live in a state that allows law abiding citizens to carry a concealed weapon and allows the death penalty for those scumbags that deserve it (we proudly fried Ted Bundy:D). I doubt I will get much argument from fellow Americans on this Tractor thread.

In my opinion you dont shoot anyone unless you or your family are in immediate danger.

I Agree,
But if someone breaks into your home while you are there...
They are putting you and your family in "immediate danger".

When someone is shooting you, and yelling die, I would think that is immediate danger. If it were me and I had a gun I would defend myself. I think that is not irresponsible action.
