A good friend of mine recently swapped a 3.9L 4BT [little 4cyl brother to the 5.9] into his fiberglassed tubbed Jeep CJ-7. He got the engine and Turbo 400 Gm trans for $3500. Evidently, the Lil cummins/Th400 combo was standard issue in GM P chassis trucks. The swap was realy very easy, and the engine looks like it is supposed to be in there. At first, it did not have nearly the power that the old 304 gasser did, But with a few injection pump "adjustments" and a different governor spring, It has way more power and low end grunt than any Fiberglass Jeep should. I would love to swap a 12 valve 5.9 into a nice classic 67-87 chevy/ GMC , 73-79 Ford or 70's dodge power wagon, Just the thought of a cranked up 5.9 in a classic 3/4 or 1 ton 4x4 is making me drool on my keyboard.

That is probably what I will do with my 97' 12V with a mere 215k miles. I do not follow the Cummins site's much these days but there have been plenty of swaps. The one thing to keep in mind is the ~1000lb engine weight. Though, I remember seeing one 70 era's Ford that a guy put an 8.3 with a 10spd in. I think an 8.3 is around 1300-1500 lbs and a 10spd is no lightweight either. He had done a pretty slick job of fabbing up a frame to hold it all.

The worst is yet to come DPF + UREA tank.

I've got a 07 ram 3500 cab/chassis which was made 07 emissions compliant, the 07 was Dodges debut of the 6.7, when the pick-ups came out with the 6.7 they tried to get a jump on things and made them 2010 compliant I think they already have some kind of urea injection (Have no idea what it is) with their blue tech programming, I've heard that's what's causing the problems, not the Cummins engine but all the add on emissions crap and software that was not ready to be put into production.

I joined a few diesel truck sites when I was researching my new truck purchase, I had a 95 2500 w/cummins that never made me miss a days work in 12 years, even though I'm not crazy brand loyal, I was leaning towards Dodge/Cummins from my past experience.

Anyway I haven't been on the truck sites for several months and when I checked back in this week I was shocked at some of the negative talk regarding Dodge/Cummins. guys talking about lemon laws, buy backs and class action law suits. even referring to cummins as a POS, which until now I don't think has ever been uttered out of the lips of even the most rabid other brand followers.

I am totally happy with mine, Aisin 6 speed auto, variable geometry turbo (engine brake) with tow/haul mode which is awesome when loaded heavy. The regen mode sucks some fuel but overall is not bad.

Here's mine,

I wouldn't mind having on site for a few weeks either.:D:D

Surely like the rake attachment. That has to take the hard out of rock separation.:D

Best of all it's got a shinny blade.:D

I've had my 6.7 with DPF for 19 months now. Two trips to the dealer, both to reflash the computer and upgrade the software and this second time, just last month with a new TB to replace both O2 sensors,, I don't think a couple of reflashes and the O2 sensor replacement is the end of the world like some here think. BTW, I can see replacing the sensors as they are almost the lowest part of the truck,, One before and the other after, the DPF tank. They get bombarded with every puddle and whatever else I go through. I am surprised by the way they are placed, to last this long. Mileage is consistant at 17.6. Every once in a while it goes up one plus in a tail wind and equally down one plus in a hard head wind.. Towing my tractor an L 48 at 8800lbs and the trailer, 18 ft at 12,000 GVW weighing 3300 lbs, bumper pull. on the highway mileage drops considerably to 12/13, and if I go off in areas that are extremely steep, and we have many here, towing the same,, I've seen it just over 11 mpg.

I am a Ford Man but have the up most respect for both the Cummins and the D-Max. Just don't care for the package they are wrapped in. All this talk about the Cummins 6.7 being a lemon reminds me of when I bought my 2 6.0L Powerstrokes. I have not had a single day of trouble from my 2004 and my 2006 Powerstrokes. Not one single problem. I did have a dash cluster fail on my 2006 which caused me to run out of fuel but no problems with the engines or Torque shift trannys.

I think its just luck of the draw. I hear bad things all the time about the 6.0 but I have both of mine working hard and hopped up to about 525hp with out a day of trouble.

I say if you are a Dodge guy and happy don't listen to the others just like I do with my Ford's. That goes for you GM guys also. You bought the truck because its the one that fit your needs and it was what you liked.

Chris

If it makes you feel any better, I have been driving my chevy around for a month or so with no speedometer or oil pressure gauge backlighting, and also a shift quadrant that only lights up after I slam my fist down on the dash board. It seems GM chose to use non servicable LED bulbs for all of its gauge and climate control backlighting. The only readilly available repair option is complete cluster replacement for around $600.00. I have heard of a guy on EBAY that refurbishes them for 150 bucks, I think I will look him up. It seems as though most Diesel engines will greatly outlast the vehicles that they are bolted into
