And don't forget the property tax is not the only tax. Does Vermont have an income tax? My property tax for 45ish acres and a 2424 sf house is about $2,000. we had to get a timber valuation which saved at least a $1,000. We would have been close to having to pay $300 a month in property tax.
When we bought the place the tax bill was nothing. Then reapraisals took place and our tax went up 3-4 times. Without the timber valuation we would almost certainly have to sell off land in the future as property values and thus tax went up. 2K maybe be cheap, and it is, sorta, but then we also have income tax to pay.
We have been throwing money into Education for decades with no real increase in performance or so says the studies I have read about.
Our oldest is in a Charter school whose funding is from the state not local property taxes. They don't get as much money as the local schools and they are constantly asking for money.
I understand the money issue and it is going for good things. The school is in a brand new building. Before the new school was built, K-12 was spread over two commercial locations. Most of the school was in various store fronts including an old grocery store.
With the new school, there is a need to build a play ground, sports fields, this that and the other.
The school ALWAY has some sort of money raiser going on. I mean one or two a week. The school is constantly asking for help for this project or that project. Their email is like SPAM.

Dan
