Shotgun shells

I went to cabelas to pick up a few bags of shot, $50 / bag, I almost fell on the floor, I thought it may have been for 2 bags or something, nope, 1 bag. I bought about 500 pounds several years ago and paid less than $20 / bag. At this rate, reloading is not worth my time, I will be shooting less than I like.

I admit, I missed the shooting last year, so I have not purchased shotshells for two years. I was very surprised to see the usual brands going for $7-8 a box, (25 shells) (#8 shot). What has happened? I know 2 years ago they were half of that price. JC

I just got a box of 100 shells, Winchester brand, low base target rounds. $22 at Wllyworld.

I got a box of Winchester 2-3/4 #5 Express for pheasant, high base rounds(25). $17.99!

Plain target rounds are out there for not too bad of prices. Premium target is more...

I agree , and if you feel the need to kill something , theres plenty of feral cats , dogs , goats , foxes and pigs that are destroying the enviroment to shoot at . My heart sinks when i see a picture of a hunter with a high powered rifle and a scope with his foot on a deer or a bear etc .

I'm not much of a hunter myself, but it is worth pointing out that in much of this country hunting is just about the only control on the deer population. Sure, they look cute sometimes, Bambie an all, but for us they are pretty much like the rabbits you folks down under had so much trouble with.

My heart sinks hearing about those cute kangaroos being hunted, and cane-toad golf. Those little hopping bunnies don't deserve to die, and those dingos are just doing what dingos do - they shouldn't be shot just because.

I am a hunter, and I have no apologies for it. Here in Michigan the deer are overpopulated, we have killed all of their natural predators so their only current predators are inadvertant, cars and bad winters, and people with guns.

I agree that things shouldn't be killed for no reason, and while overpopulation and stopping a long suffering death by starvation could be considered reason enough, the vast majority of hunters eat their kill. There are many who donate their kill to the less fortunate so that they could have food as well.

For the record, trophy hunting safaris are also reason enough in my book. They are part of the economy. They keep the land they own natural. And they bring attention to conservation, which is done by the most part by those hunting the land.

Don't forget where all that conservation money comes from in the U.S.

Hunters.

Fact is, most hunters I know (myself included) realize the fact that the natural resources for wildlife in the U.S is dwindling, and those resources must be protected.

Mother Nature has a way of "thinning the heard", however it seem "civilization" gets in the way of her plans sometimes. Ironic as well that it's usually "civilization" who chastises the hunters who realize what the "truth" is.

EDIT: Nah, we've haven't gotten off topic yet:D

I purchased a case of those $4 a box shells last year, and it was pointed out to me that I need to start looking at the small print a little better. Turns out the boxes only have 20 shells in them, rather than the normal 25...
Made the deal 20% less of a deal...

Good Evenin David,
Im taking a real good guess they werent skeet loads ! You need 25 shells to shoot a round ! ;) And yes, the prices have skyrocketed ! About 3 years ago I was buying flats of 20 ga skeet loads for about $3 a box ! Those days are long gone, but heck you never know, gas used to be $4 plus ! :)

lead prices shot up to record levels last year. it went from $8 a bag to $35 because of demand in china, for kids toys an batteries. the number 2 producing mine in Australia was shut down for environmental concerns [poisoning birds while loading ships] the mine has reopened and no one wants lead tainted toys so now the price of lead has come back to earth but a lot of $35 lead is in the system. until that inventory is sold prices wont come down much.

In my area, the deer are destroying the environment - and your point is?
