Ford 3000 - Blueish hue smoke story / question

I've got what I'd call a tired engine in my little 1700 it's hard starting and does smoke at start up even though it only has 2600+ hours on it, it was worked hard by a commercial landscaper.
Tried the ether and bound it up, had to pull start it and when it did start it sounded like it was coming apart.

Just put a $30. block heater in it, actually lower radiator hose heater and even though I haven't tried it on a cold start yet I'm confident it's going to help alot, after just half an hour with it on the block felt warm to the touch, may even help with the smoking at start up.

OP may benefit from a block heater, at least it should keep him off the starting fluid.
JB.

I had hoped the ether you used was just because you had burned the batteries out trying to start it.. however.. in view of everything that's been said.. it does appear to just be a case of slightly tired engine...

Some machines are naturally cold natured.. but in general.. a diesel with some sort of cold start aid really shouldn't need ether, in positive temps, IMHO.

well it doesnt have glow plugs, and my other tractor with glow plugs didnt have an issue, but it had glow plugs.

#1 - spend 30 bucks on a heater. block or hose.

#2 - get rid of the ether - it WILL destroy the engine. FAST.

#3 - if the tractor was sitting for any length of time, the rings could be gummed up stuck. Add a GALLON of 2 cycle oil to the next full tank of fuel. It will burn fine, but will lubricate the rings and may smooth it out. Sounds crazy, but it is pretty common to do. Some use ATF, some use Marvel Mystery Oil. The cheap 10 dollar gallon jug from Wallys is all you need.

#4 I thought "OCR" failure was Optical Character Recognition and the tractor was smoking in protest to not being able to read TBN! Who knew?

well i just wish it were summer so i could try and start this b*itch from an extended break at that time to see how easily it starts. mind you im drunk right now so if this donsnt make sense sorry.. either way, i would much ratehr try starting my tractor without ether in the cold then with ether so maybe i should try and find an oil dipstick heater or a magnetized block heater or w/e..

i do know though that whenthe tractor has been running adn its warm, its starts right up no issues.

ive only expereinced this tractor in cold weather though.

i also dont know how much ether this thing has had shot in it.. but when you say destroy it fast, i mean how fast we talking what does ether actually do to intneral components? i know its a highly combustible material, but i mean so is any fuel..

ether explodes.. diesel burns.. You can litterally blow the lands/grooves off a piston.. or hole apiston with liberal use of ether. Some engines are more tolerant than others.. and some have specific meterd ether cold start aids so that yuo don't give them too much.

When we talk about an ether 'addicted' machine.. we are refering to one whose' compression is so low that it won't fire off byitself without ether in anything other than best circumstances.. IE.. mild day.. or pre-warmed.. etc.

thartwegerwell it doesnt have glow plugs said:
But does it have an intake heater.. or plug in the manifold for one...

Measure your lower hose, go to napa or pep-boys, get the heater, cut the hose and install 2 hose clamps, done.
I tested mine today, not that cold this morning but still after an hour of heating it started easier than it ever had even in the summer. I do have glow plugs and use them but this engine was ornery starting and would stall a few times and stumble a bit before it would even out. today it stayed running after the initial start and idled smooth pretty quickly, and definitely LESS SMOKE.
Good Luck JB.

I wonder what happens when either and intake heaters get together?:D
