New Pick em up Trucks

I had a new Ford F 250 3/4 ton Camper Special back in 1971.
3 or 4 thousand pounds was no problem on it.
Some how I can't fathom a 1/2 ton being able to handle that much weight.
Are you saying today's new 1/2 ton would handle towing my BX23
on a 16 foot trailer better easier and safer than the old 71 3/4 ton Ford would have?
That's kinda hard for me to believe.

Any 1/2 ton truck even with the base engine could pull around your BX23 and all the implements you want. My tractor weighs 5,200# with out the Backhoe but with the grader blade on the rear and I tow it fine with a tandem axle trailer and any of my trucks and have towed it numerous times behind a 2004 V8 Mercury Mountaineer. And yes, any new 1/2 ton truck would be much safer to pull any trailer with up to its max tow rating than any 1970's era truck. The breaks, tires, ect, ect, ect are so much better.

The new F-150 has a trailer stability feature built in that works much like vehicle stability control on every truck, even the base model. They have the option of a integrated pressure driven electric brake controller that is hands down 10 times better than any aftermarket brake controller sold with one exception. That would be the aftermarket systems that tie into the master cylinder like Brake Max. By the way GM also offers a brake controller but Toyota, Dodge, and Nissan have yet to. The max payload on the New F-150 is in the 3,100# neighborhood and the max tow rating is 11,300#. So yes, these new trucks by all the manufactures are hands down better and tougher than 70's and 80's 3/4 ton trucks but that is just progress. In 15 years these new trucks will be relics also.

You didn't really specify your needs which makes it somewhat difficult to offer valuable information. You did offer quite a spread of choices in your initial post. The Titan and F250 don't have much in common.

A couple of premises that I used in my own recent truck purchase:
1. There are no bad choices; they are all pretty good.
2. The "right" size truck is always better than the "supersize" truck. It's easy to talk yourself into something bigger than you may need. Decide what you need and stick to that segment.

In my purchase the right segment was the half ton:
1. I'm not in a trade and only use my truck for recreation. I have something in the back of it or on a trailer nearly every weekend but nothing that a half ton cannot handle well.
2. I have a young family so I needed a double cab with all the entertainment goodies.
3. I wanted it to have some pep.

That led me to a Toyota Tundra Crewmax Limited 5.7. Could I have been satisfied with a Ford, GMC, or Dodge? Probably. Nissan? No way! The right deal and the right financing came together for me and I have been very pleased.

There is plenty of good information on this board but I don't think you will get the "best stuff" until you provide some more detail as to your needs.

Good luck,

Joe

1*This sounds so odd to me after being advised on this board for years that I needed a 3/4 ton pick up to handle the BX23 and a 16 foot trailer.
Back in 2004 and 2005 nearly every one replying to me about this said i needed a 3/4 ton pick up.
I bet the 3/4 got the vote in 97 to 99 percent of the replies I received .

What has Changed since then ??

Everything has changed. You do not need a 3/4 for a BX tractor. Would it be nice, yes. I am not sure what your tractor weighs but I am guessing 2,500# or less with a loader. Even with a 2,000# trailer a Ranger would handle that job. Like I said my tractor weighs 5,200# and my trailer weighs about 1,300# with the chains and spare tire on it and I have pulled it 110 miles each way a half dozen times with a Mercury Mountaineer V8 to my inlaws multiple times.

The attached picture shows my truck during a deck building project.

I am now considering a 2008 F150 4x4 super cab. It is over $11,000 off original MSRP.
It should also be more heavy duty than my 2001.

I tow my tractor on a tandem axle trailer once in awhile. What I really wanted was more payload as indicated in the attached photo.

The F150 is more agressively sale priced. F250's are less discounted, and very difficult to find at this date.

The Ford propaganda machine was also impressive at the dealership. Ford looks pretty good.

Do you know the payload differences between your current 150 and the new '08's?
We just bought a new '08 F150 XLT xtra cab 4wd w/ the 5.4L. Nice truck. I've hauled a full pallet of wood pellets (2000lbs) 3 times. It handled it ok, though over weight. I hauled our horse trailer almost 250 miles at a steady 65mph in hilly New England and it never hit 3000RPM even on a long hill. This w/ 3.55 gears, which I believe are the tallest offered. I was told the trailer weighs 3800lbs empty, though that seems high to me. I think you'd really notice if you approached max towing capacity. Overall, I think our truck is an excellent value.

Boy, you sure need the trailer that day. Here is a pic of my deck project. I had 3 loads like this. The trailer is a 18' tandem 7,000# unit and its behind my 2004 F-250 4x4 Power Stroke.
